Student Life Counselors at the Indiana Academy do far more than manage a building-they serve as pivotal mentors, role models, and advocates for high-achieving high school students. This full-time, 10-month live-in position is designed for those who thrive in dynamic environments and prefer a non-traditional schedule centered on evening and weekend engagement. You will be the heartbeat of our residential community, balancing a professional presence with authentic relationship-building to foster a safe, inclusive, and academically vibrant "home away from home."

Key considerations for this position:
This is a 10-month, full-time, live-in position that is renewable annually upon good review.
We are only able to house the employee. We are unable to house a spouse, significant other, children, and/or dependents.
We are unable to house pets unless there is a ESA consideration.
A valid driver's license for at least three years is required and the successful candidate must be insurable under the Ball State Fleet insurance policy.
There is no meal plan included with this position, but there is a $1,000 stipend per semester for meals to use at any Ball State Dining Location.
We provide a furnished apartment; there is no commute. Housing costs (heating/cooling, internet, utilities, repairs, etc.) are covered as part of living in the building. Each apartment includes a private bathroom and bedroom space. Additionally, the apartment has a living room/office space that is shared when on duty, but functions as a private living room when off duty.
Full university benefits including health insurance, retirement, and tuition remission are offered/included.
This position involves working with minors, therefore, the successful candidate must pass a background check and complete additional training.

What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function:

Full-time live-in residence hall positions with a primary work schedule during evening and weekend hours. Work with high school students to make significant contributions to their academic, personal, social, and physical development; encourage involvement in Indiana Academy programs and events; provide opportunities for problem solving and honest feedback; plan and support activities and be involved in student retention efforts; maintain a healthy relationship with the students while remaining professional at all times. (10-month contract)

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

1. Willingness and commitment to work with the Academy's high school students regarding the following areas: be a positive role model and example to others; protection and safety of all residents of the building; addressing conflict resolution; addressing all behavior concerns and problems; counseling and referrals; encourage students to do community activities and events; facilitate recreational and/or intramural activities; communicate maintenance needs to the Administrative Coordinator and Associate Director of Residential and Student Affairs; work with teachers and Academic Affairs in supporting students in academic endeavors; work with, assist, and help support other areas of the school including Student Health Care and Mental Health and Support Services; maintain knowledge of and develop relationships with students in assigned areas.

2. Assess and provide feedback to students regarding residence life skills.

3. Provide supervision of students; be timely, effective, and consistent in confronting and re-directing behaviors that are contradictory to the mission and the goals of the Academy with confidence and consistency.

4. Participate in orientation, retention, and matriculation efforts with students across their time at the Academy including, but not limited to, Move-In Week and Graduation Week.

5. Participate in staff training and development sessions.

6. Provide guidance to assigned Academy student Peer Assistants.

7. Provide programming for the residence hall: responsible for 10 programs/activities per semester; plan, organize, and implement weekend activities a few times per semester; support Peer Assistants in planning and implementing programs for individual floors.

8. Enforce all Academy regulations and policies.

9. Communicate regularly and be an effective resource to students, parents, teachers, and other professional staff.

10. Keep all documentation up to date and professional.

11. Complete various desk duties, rounds, check-ins, and curfew as part of daily residential operations.

12. Work cooperatively with floor co-professionals and team leaders.

13. Perform duties as assigned and scheduled by the Director of Residential and Student Affairs and/or the Associate Director of Residential and Student Affairs, including Staff Meetings/Staff Development once a week; individual meetings with Associate Director of Student Life once per semester; meetings with team leader to plan team programming; be responsible for an extra duty assisting the Department of Residential and Student Affairs.

14. Transport students in cases of emergency, athletic practices, and general transportation needs as required.

15. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university by date of first pay period.

  • Experience working with students or youth of any age; or experience as a volunteer, working with, or helping others in a school, in-home, or any other setting.

  • Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy; must be 21 years of age. Pre-employment screening: requires successful completion of a Driver's License check.

  • Authorization to work in the US. Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the US without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a resident assistant or summer residential camp counselor; experience with gifted high school students.
