What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Structural Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Structural Designer, you need a solid background in civil or structural engineering principles, proficiency in drafting, and typically a relevant degree or diploma. Familiarity with technical tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, and structural analysis software, as well as knowledge of building codes, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and clear communication skills help set top performers apart. These competencies are crucial for producing safe, efficient, and code-compliant designs that meet client and regulatory requirements.

What are some common challenges structural designers face when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Structural designers often collaborate closely with architects, civil engineers, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) professionals. A common challenge is coordinating design changes and ensuring that structural solutions align with evolving architectural concepts and system requirements. Effective communication and proficiency with design software are essential for integrating feedback and maintaining project timelines. Adapting to tight deadlines and balancing multiple priorities are also typical aspects of the role, especially when working on large or complex projects.

What are structural designers?

Structural designers are professionals who create the plans and specifications for buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and capable of withstanding various forces. They work closely with architects and engineers to design the framework and select appropriate materials for construction projects. Structural designers use specialized software and their knowledge of engineering principles to analyze loads, stresses, and potential weaknesses, ensuring the integrity of the final structure.

What is the highest salary of a structural engineer?

The highest salaries for structural engineers can exceed $150,000 annually, especially for those with extensive experience, advanced certifications, or working in high-cost-of-living areas. Senior-level professionals, specialized consultants, and those in managerial roles tend to earn the top salaries in the field.

What is the difference between Structural Designer vs Structural Engineer?

AspectStructural DesignerStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering, often with certification or licensing depending on regionRequires a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and licensure (e.g., PE license)
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, often working with CAD software, collaborating with engineers and architectsDesign and analysis, overseeing structural integrity, and ensuring code compliance
Industry UsageCommon in architectural firms, design consultancies, and construction planningFound in engineering firms, consulting agencies, and construction companies

While both roles involve structural design, Structural Designers focus more on creating detailed drawings and plans, whereas Structural Engineers perform analysis, calculations, and ensure safety standards are met. The roles often overlap, but engineers typically hold licensure and have broader responsibilities in structural safety and compliance.

Job description

Structural Engineer - Lansing, MI

DISHER is partnering with an engineering-forward architecture firm to add a Structural Engineer to their team in Lansing, MI. This company delivers facility-focused projects from concept through construction, combining structural expertise with integrated architectural and engineering design. In this role, you will lead and support structural design for a wide variety of project types, helping ensure safe, efficient, and constructible solutions.

What it's like to work here:

You'll join a structural group with deep experience and strong mentorship, embedded in a compact, multidisciplinary firm. The culture emphasizes thoroughness, clear communication, and pride in the quality and clarity of drawings and details. The environment is relationship-focused-both with clients and internally-and is well-suited for someone who enjoys collaborating closely with architects and engineers on complex, high-impact projects.
What you will get to do
  • Collaborate with project stakeholders to define the structural scope, objectives, and requirements for facility-related projects.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for industrial and manufacturing structures using steel, reinforced concrete, and masonry, ensuring compliance with codes and standards.
  • Develop accurate, cost-conscious solutions by applying knowledge of materials, labor, and construction methods to structural systems.
  • Review and provide feedback on design drawings and models to verify accuracy, structural integrity, and adherence to project requirements.
  • Prepare clear construction specifications outlining materials, methods, and quality standards for structural components.
  • Compile coordinated construction document packages, including drawings, specifications, and supporting documentation for issue to contractors.
  • Support quality assurance by checking structural designs and documents for compliance with relevant codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
What will make you successful
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • PE license strongly preferred (effectively required for leading projects); ability to obtain or maintain licensure in multiple states is a plus.
  • 5-10 years of structural engineering experience, preferably with facility-related and industrial projects.
  • Strong experience with steel and concrete design; exposure to masonry and wood structures is highly valuable.
  • Proficiency with Revit; experience with structural analysis tools such as RAM (or similar) is preferred.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, ASCE loading requirements, and current steel and concrete codes.
  • Proven ability to develop creative, practical structural solutions tailored to different project types.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey structural concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, close attention to detail, and a commitment to thorough, high-quality drawings and calculations.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks in a busy, project-driven environment and function effectively as part of a small, collaborative structural team.
