What is a strategy lead?

Strategy Leads are professionals responsible for guiding an organization's strategic direction and ensuring its initiatives align with long-term goals. They analyze market trends, identify growth opportunities, and work closely with senior leadership to develop and implement effective business strategies. Strategy Leads often coordinate cross-functional teams, manage key projects, and monitor progress to ensure the organization remains competitive and achieves its objectives.

How does a strategy lead typically collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive organizational initiatives?

As a Strategy Lead, you will regularly work with teams from marketing, finance, operations, and product development to align strategic objectives and ensure successful execution of organizational initiatives. This involves facilitating workshops, leading stakeholder meetings, and translating high-level goals into actionable plans for different departments. Strong communication and relationship-building skills are essential, as you will often act as a bridge between executive leadership and operational teams to keep projects on track and measure progress against key performance indicators.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategy lead, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategy Lead, you need strong analytical thinking, business acumen, and a background in management, consulting, or a related field, often supported by an MBA or advanced degree. Familiarity with strategic planning frameworks, data analytics tools, and project management software is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills help drive cross-functional alignment and influence decision-makers. These competencies are crucial for developing and executing effective strategies that achieve organizational goals and sustain competitive advantage.

Job description

About us

One team. Global challenges. Infinite opportunities. At Viasat, we’re on a mission to deliver connections with the capacity to change the world. For more than 35 years, Viasat has helped shape how consumers, businesses, governments and militaries around the globe communicate. We’re looking for people who think big, act fearlessly, and create an inclusive environment that drives positive impact to join our team.

What you'll do

We're excited to announce a dynamic opportunity for a talented Strategy Lead to join our growing team in a fully remote capacity. While this role offers the flexibility to work from anywhere within the United States, candidates must reside on the West Coast and align with the Pacific time zone. Please note that occasional travel may be required to support key initiatives and team collaborations.

As the Strategy Lead, you will serve as a high-impact internal advisor, reporting directly to the VP of Corporate Strategy within our Chief Enterprise & Strategy Office. This is a hands-on leadership role designed for a professional who pairs elite management consulting rigor with the humility to build a spreadsheet from scratch. You will analyze markets, competitors, and emerging trends to help Viasat’s leaders decide "where to play and how to win." While you will initially operate as a key individual contributor within a lean team, this role is intended as a succession path for a leadership role.

The day-to-day
  • Strategic Advisory: Partner with internal business leaders to analyze market shifts and competitor movements, providing provocative insights on how to reposition the business for success.
  • Data Analysis & Pattern Recognition: Work through large datasets to identify trends and accelerate the decision-making process for senior executives.
  • Synthesis & Storytelling: Take complex information known by various stakeholders and structure it back to them in a way that is clear, compelling, and actionable.
  • Operational Execution: Get your hands dirty in the details, from building complex financial models to developing high-stakes presentations.
  • Relationship Management: Use "organizational street smarts" and exceptional client skills to engage with senior leaders in an open, helpful, and collaborative manner.
  • Team Development: Mentor and eventually lead a team of junior strategists with specialized skillsets to support Viasat’s diverse business units.

What you'll need
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Economics, or a related field; MBA or advanced degree from a top-tier institution is highly preferred. Applicants with an engineering background who have since obtained meaningful business experience are very welcome.
  • Experience: 3+ years of professional experience, ideally significant time at a top-tier management consulting firm (e.g., McKinsey, Bain, BCG).
  • Consulting DNA: A proven track record of data-driven problem solving, rigorous analysis, and the ability to remain unflappable in high-pressure environments.
  • Technical Skillset: Expert-level proficiency in data analysis and financial modeling; a willingness to "build the spreadsheets" yourself.
  • Strategic Acumen: Deep understanding of strategy frameworks (market entry, competitive positioning, and growth acceleration).
  • Soft Skills: Exceptional polish and the ability to influence senior leadership through data and "street smarts."
  • Travel: 15-25% Travel is required- dependent upon business needs.

What will help you on the job
  • Personality Profile: We are looking for a specific archetype: high-performing and highly skilled, yet humble, open, and flexible.
  • Military Background: We would love to talk to Veterans who bring leadership experience and a mission-first mindset.
  • Industry Knowledge: Experience in aerospace, satellite communications, telecommunications , or other high-tech sectors.
  • Drive and curiosity: Successful candidates will be willing to invest the time to quickly come up to speed on various markets, including technical elements which are critical to competitive dynamics.
  • Executive Presence: The ability to be provocative yet helpful, pushing the business forward while maintaining strong internal partnerships.
  • Adaptability: A "get it done" attitude with the flexibility to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving global organization.

Salary range
$150,500.00 - $237,500.00 / annually. For specific work locations within San Jose, the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range for this role is $187,000.00- $280,000.00/ annually
