Job description

Instrument is a design and technology company. We build brands, products, and experiences that move businesses forward—by making the complex simple.

For over 20 years, we’ve partnered with companies like Google, ServiceNow, Uber, Eventbrite, and ŌURA, helping them navigate change, launch new ideas, and grow with intention.

Our work spans Brand, Marketing, and Product, but what defines us is how we work. We bring strategy, design, and engineering together from the start, moving quickly from idea to execution and refining as we go. We aim to do great work and be great to work with, because both matter.

We’re a collaborative, hands-on team with roots in Portland and New York and a distributed presence across the U.S. and Europe. We build teams around the needs of the work, staying nimble without sacrificing craft.

We value curiosity, perspective, and continuous learning, and we’re committed to building an inclusive environment where people can do their best work.

If that sounds like you, we’d love to meet you.

You are a strategic relationship builder, business driver, and trusted advisor who helps shape the future of client partnerships. You bring together business acumen, creativity, and operational clarity to identify growth opportunities, deepen executive relationships, and guide teams toward meaningful impact.

As Director, Strategic Growth, you lead account expansion efforts across a portfolio a key clients—partnering closely with studio leadership to expand existing relationships, shape opportunities before briefs emerge, and support new business efforts across strategic target accounts.

This role sits at the intersection of growth, client leadership, and strategic problem-solving. You are equally comfortable leading executive conversations, building account growth plans, developing proposals, and rallying cross-functional teams around opportunities. You understand how to balance relationship-building with commercial outcomes and know how to navigate complex organizations to unlock long-term value.

This is an opportunity to step into a team with established client relationships, meaningful active revenue, and significant growth potential—working alongside teams shaping some of the most influential AI, product, and brand work happening today

  • Develop and maintain quarterly account plans that identify objectives, whitespace opportunities, stakeholder strategies, risks, and growth actions

  • Support account retention, expansion, and long-term relationship health through strategic planning and executive engagement
  • Help manage inbound growth opportunities and assess prioritization, complexity, and strategic fit
  • Identify and shape opportunities before formal briefs exist
  • Lead intake conversations with prospective and existing clients, helping define business challenges and potential engagement approaches
  • Build and present “hello decks,” functional proposals, and strategic growth recommendations
  • Partner with cross-disciplinary teams to scope opportunities, shape engagement strategies, and develop compelling proposals
  • Support strategic target-account pursuits and contribute to broader business development initiatives within the studio
  • Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders across complex organizations
  • Navigate large, matrixed environments with multiple decision-makers and evolving priorities
  • Develop an understanding of client business needs, organizational dynamics, and market pressures to uncover growth opportunities
  • Partner with leadership to establish executive-level touchpoints and deepen strategic relationships
  • Contribute to strategic planning conversations, helping evolve client briefs and identify long-term growth opportunities
  • Partner closely with Delivery and Production teams to ensure successful transitions from opportunity shaping into execution
  • Maintain a strong understanding of trends across technology, AI, product innovation, marketing, and brand experience
  • Bring thoughtful perspectives on how emerging technologies and cultural shifts create new opportunities for clients
  • Contribute insights that help shape account strategy, offerings, and future client opportunities
 What You'll Bring
  • 8–12+ years of experience in strategic growth, account leadership, business development, consulting, or agency leadership roles
  • Experience managing and growing enterprise-level accounts, ideally within technology-focused or innovation-driven organizations
  • Proven success growing existing client relationships while supporting new business and opportunity development
  • Experience owning or contributing to a multimillion-dollar book of business and demonstrating measurable account growth
  • Strong presentation, communication, and proposal development skills
  • Ability to confidently lead intake conversations, shape opportunities, and guide clients through complex engagements
  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to develop scopes, strategic recommendations, and integrated solutions
