What is a strat?

A 'Strat' is a commonly used abbreviation for 'strategist,' especially within financial institutions like investment banks or trading firms. Strats are professionals who combine quantitative analysis, financial knowledge, and programming skills to develop models, tools, and strategies that support trading, risk management, and decision-making. Their work often involves building pricing models, automating trading systems, and analyzing large datasets to optimize financial performance. Strats typically work closely with traders, risk managers, and IT teams to implement their solutions. The role requires strong analytical, mathematical, and coding abilities.

How does a strategy professional typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Strategy professionals frequently work cross-functionally, partnering with teams such as marketing, finance, operations, and product development to align organizational goals and drive business growth. They facilitate strategic planning sessions, gather input from various stakeholders, and ensure that departmental priorities are synchronized with the overall company vision. This collaborative approach not only enhances decision-making but also fosters a culture of transparency and shared accountability across the business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a strategy consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Strategy Consultant, you need strong analytical thinking, business acumen, and typically a degree in business, economics, or a related field. Familiarity with data analysis tools (like Excel, Power BI), presentation software, and sometimes certifications such as PMP or MBA are highly valued. Outstanding communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills help consultants build trust and drive client buy-in.
