What is a steward?

Most often, a steward job refers to a restaurant steward, also called a kitchen steward. A restaurant steward’s responsibilities are to assist a restaurant with cleaning, dishwashing, and restocking the kitchen and dining room. A steward can also be an employee on a ship, bus, or train whose duties are to provide food and drink to passengers. A ship’s steward is essentially the ship’s housekeeper and organizes and prepares meals on the ship. A steward can also refer to a data steward, which is an employee who governs a company’s data, or to an official who keeps order at a public event.

What does a steward do?

A steward is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and organization in kitchens, dining areas, or on ships and aircraft. Their duties typically include washing dishes, cleaning surfaces, managing waste, and sometimes assisting with basic food preparation. Stewards play a crucial role in ensuring hygiene standards are met and that the working environment runs smoothly for chefs and service staff. In hospitality or maritime settings, they may also help with serving guests and maintaining inventory of supplies.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a steward, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Steward, you generally need knowledge of hygiene standards, basic food handling, and cleaning procedures, with a high school diploma often preferred. Familiarity with commercial kitchen equipment, dishwashing machines, and relevant safety certifications like a food handler's permit is typical. Attention to detail, teamwork, and strong time management are the soft skills that set top candidates apart. These skills ensure efficient kitchen operations, maintain safety and cleanliness, and support a positive dining experience for guests.

What are the most common challenges faced by stewards in a busy hospitality environment?

Stewards in busy hospitality settings often face challenges such as managing high volumes of dishware during peak service hours, maintaining rigorous sanitation standards, and coordinating efficiently with kitchen and service staff. The fast-paced environment requires strong organizational skills and stamina to handle repetitive tasks under time pressure. Additionally, stewards must be adaptable to shifting priorities and able to communicate effectively to ensure smooth kitchen operations.
