FPS Civil, a 100% Employee-Owned Company, is seeking a driven, hands-on Accounting Controller to oversee all accounting operations and lead the accounting team. The ideal candidate will bring construction industry experience, expertise in Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting, and an active CPA license. This role is designed for a high-performing professional ready to make an impact in a dynamic, growth-oriented environment.

Reporting directly to the CFO, the Accounting Controller will lead monthly close and audit processes, ensure GAAP and ERISA compliance (specifically, ESOP and 401(k) plan administration), and drive financial accuracy, compliance, and operational efficiency across the organization. Additionally, this individual will manage, mentor, and develop the accounting team, fostering a collaborative and accountable environment aligned with FPS Civilโ€™s employee-owned culture.

Key Responsibilities

โ€ข Oversee accounting operations, including General Ledger, AP, AR, Progress Billings, Payroll (including Certified Payroll), Cost Tracking, and Subcontractor Administration.

โ€ข Oversee/manage OCIP/CCIP enrollments and ensure timely submission of all related reporting requirements.

โ€ข Lead the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timely delivery of financial reports.

โ€ข Prepare/manage journal entries and account reconciliations. Lead and complete the preparation and analysis of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules to ensure precise job costing and accurate percentage-of-completion revenue recognition. Develop and present monthly consolidated financial statements, ratio analyses, and key financial reports for the Executive Leadership team.

โ€ข Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local legal requirements by monitoring legislative changes, enforcing adherence to regulations, filing reports, and advising management on necessary actions.

โ€ข Ensure GAAP compliance and support ESOP/401(k) plan administration.

โ€ข Mentor and lead accounting staff to promote growth, collaboration, and accountability.

โ€ข Serve as the primary liaison for external auditorsโ€”directing audit preparation, coordination, and response activities.

โ€ข Collaborate with project managers and leadership to provide actionable financial insights.

โ€ข Support financial planning efforts by developing budgets, forecasts, financial models, and variance analyses to guide company strategy and operational efficiency.

โ€ข Identify and implement process and system improvements to enhance scalability, accuracy, and overall efficiency of the accounting function.

Qualifications

โ€ข Bachelorโ€™s degree in Accounting or Finance with an active CPA license required.

โ€ข Minimum of 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 2+ years in construction industry accounting.

โ€ข Extensive knowledge of GAAP-compliant financial reporting and construction accounting principles, including Work-in-Progress (WIP) accounting, job cost analysis, and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition.

โ€ข Solid understanding of bonding requirements, lien waivers and releases (conditional and unconditional), subcontractor compliance, and multi-entity accounting operations.

โ€ข Hands-on experience with Certified Payroll, including LCP Tracker submissions, required.

โ€ข OCIP/CCIP enrollment and reporting experience preferred.

โ€ข Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, modeling) and ERP systems required. Experience with Vista by Viewpoint, ProjectSight, and Field Management preferred; Crystal Reports expertise is highly desired.

โ€ข Experience working as both a General Contractor and Subcontractor within the construction industry preferred.

โ€ข Proven ability to teach, mentor, and lead accounting team members, fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
