Role Overview

The Startup Manager will lead the planning, execution, and finalization of startup and commissioning support across all construction projects, ensuring delivery meets high standards for safety, schedule, budget, and quality. This individual will create detailed startup plans for mechanical and plumbing equipment and systems on commercial, industrial, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing projects.

Responsibilities include reviewing project plans, specifications, and equipment submittals to build project-specific startup and commissioning plans, coordinating schedules with project management teams, vendors, and subcontractors, and proactively identifying potential construction problems and cost-saving measures. The Startup Manager will also lead job cost breakdowns, schedule of values, and billing review, while supervising and developing the startup technician team.

Ideal candidates are hands-on leaders with deep commercial mechanical or plumbing construction experience, proven success managing project startup and commissioning at scale, and the ability to balance technical precision with operational coordination across multiple concurrent projects.

Core Responsibilities

  • Create a detailed plan for the execution of mechanical equipment and system startup and commissioning on commercial, industrial, healthcare, and advanced manufacturing projects.
  • Oversee the startup of mechanical and/or plumbing equipment for all construction projects to ensure each project is constructed in accordance with design specifications, budget, and schedule.
  • Review project plans and specifications, build the project startup plan, recommend potential cost-saving measures, and identify potential construction problems.
  • Complete job cost breakdowns and schedule of values, and review and approve project billings.
  • Work with project management teams, vendors, and subcontractors to coordinate project schedules for execution of the startup and commissioning plan.
  • Review equipment submittals, construction documents, and specifications, and develop a project-specific startup and commissioning support plan.
  • Coordinate and hold regular project startup meetings with the project team to implement and execute the support plan effectively.
  • Coordinate with field superintendents on manpower needs, adjusting as needed.
  • Conduct and attend pre-construction and post-construction meetings.
  • Manage multiple project startup needs with varying scopes simultaneously.
  • Maintain continuous communication with the project team, GC, owner, and others as needed.
  • Complete all required documentation electronically.
  • Oversee and continuously monitor project site safety for all involved at the site.
  • Supervise and schedule startup technician schedules, and coordinate their training and processes.
  • Perform other related duties or special projects as assigned.

Required Background

  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship as sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • Background with a commercial mechanical or plumbing contractor required; GC-side, owner's rep, industrial-only, and residential backgrounds do not qualify.
  • 10+ years of experience on commercial mechanical or plumbing construction projects, including healthcare, medical gas, educational, institutional, military, and others.
  • Experience leading direct reports required.
  • Experience with project Testing, Balancing, and Commissioning teams.
  • Startup and commissioning of projects ranging in size and scope from $25M or greater preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and a required aptitude for construction.
  • Positive attitude, professional, and self-motivated, with the ability to work as both an individual contributor and a team player.
