What is a startup internship?

A startup internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience working at an early-stage company. Interns at startups often take on a wide variety of tasks, ranging from marketing and product development to customer support and business operations. These roles typically offer a fast-paced, dynamic work environment where interns can quickly learn new skills and make a tangible impact. Startup internships are ideal for those who want to experience entrepreneurial culture and gain exposure to different aspects of building a business.

What unique challenges and learning opportunities can I expect during a startup internship?

Interning at a startup often means wearing multiple hats and adapting to a fast-paced, ever-changing environment. You'll likely be involved in a variety of projects, ranging from product development to marketing, giving you broad exposure to different aspects of the business. While resources and processes may be less structured than in larger companies, this creates valuable opportunities for hands-on learning, creative problem-solving, and direct collaboration with founders and key team members. The experience can be intense but highly rewarding, as you'll quickly gain practical skills and see the immediate impact of your contributions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Startup Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Startup Intern, you need strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and a foundational understanding of business or technology principles, often supported by current enrollment in a relevant degree program. Familiarity with productivity tools like Google Workspace, project management software (e.g., Trello or Asana), and basic data analysis tools is beneficial. Initiative, effective communication, and a willingness to learn are standout soft skills in this fast-paced role. These competencies are vital for contributing meaningfully, adapting to evolving priorities, and supporting the dynamic needs of a startup environment.

What it’s like to work at Elve

We are a small team (for now!) on a mission to bring the next generation of high-speed wireless connectivity to a billion people worldwide. That kind of impact is not going to be achieved with incremental improvements - we are enabling orders of magnitude advances in production capability, cost, size, and power in the mm-wave RF amplifier market. We ask “dumb” questions all the time because we always have something to learn. We work really hard, make sure to get good sleep, handle conflict intentionally, and expect great things from each other.
