About the Role:
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will help set the technical direction for the MyAccount platform and related customer identity experiences. This is a senior individual contributor role focused on solving complex technical problems, driving architectural decisions, and influencing engineering strategy across multiple teams. You will partner closely with product managers, designers, security partners, platform teams, and fellow engineers to deliver scalable, secure, reliable, and high-performing customer experiences. You will be expected to operate with high autonomy, connect technical investments to business outcomes, and raise the engineering bar through design leadership, mentorship, and strong execution.
  • Lead the architecture, design, and implementation of complex web and platform capabilities across the MyAccount ecosystem
  • Drive technical strategy and architectural alignment across multiple teams, services, and stakeholder groups
  • Develop web applications using Next.js and React frameworks, JavaScript, and TypeScript where appropriate
  • Design and develop application programming interfaces (APIs) that enable core business capabilities and support long-term platform evolution
  • Translate business goals into pragmatic technical plans, engineering roadmaps, and scalable implementation approaches
  • Improve system reliability, scalability, performance, observability, and developer productivity across the platform
  • Ensure system monitoring and alerting are in place for both existing applications and new features to detect performance degradation
  • Proactively identify and remediate software issues, including code quality concerns, design inconsistencies, operational weaknesses, and security vulnerabilities in code, configuration, or solution architecture
  • Apply strong software engineering fundamentals, standard design patterns, and established frameworks throughout all phases of the software development lifecycle
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to build robust applications in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Develop unit and automated tests to ensure high code quality and application reliability
  • Drive clarity and alignment on technical tradeoffs, helping teams make sound decisions that balance speed, quality, and long-term maintainability
  • Mentor and coach engineers across levels, including senior engineers, through design reviews, technical guidance, and day-to-day collaboration
  • Foster a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing by documenting proposed software solutions and existing systems to maintain alignment with GM engineering standards
  • Stay current with industry trends, concepts, and best practices, and apply them where they create meaningful product or engineering value
  • Consistently uphold compliance with GM standards and industry best practices
  • Hold yourself and peers accountable for exemplifying GM's values and cultural behaviors

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 8+ years of experience in software development, including significant experience building and evolving customer-facing web applications or platforms at scale
  • Strong hands-on experience contributing to software project delivery, including deployment and operational ownership
  • Deep understanding of software architecture, distributed systems, APIs, testing strategy, quality assurance, and solution validation, including test automation
  • Strong experience maintaining, debugging, and improving live software applications to ensure stability, performance, and resilience
  • Proven ability to drive technical direction and influence architectural decisions across team boundaries without direct authority
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across engineering, product, design, security, and platform teams
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and raising the technical bar within an organization
  • Ability to connect technical initiatives to business objectives and make sound decisions in complex problem spaces

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field
  • Strong experience with modern web frameworks such as Next.js, Angular, React, or Ember
  • Experience with customer identity, authentication, account management, consent, profile, or other security-sensitive systems

  • Experience driving improvements in observability, reliability, and operational excellence for customer-facing systems

  • The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
