What are Staff Backend Software Engineers?

Staff Backend Software Engineers are senior-level engineers who design, build, and maintain the server-side infrastructure of applications. They are responsible for ensuring systems are scalable, reliable, and performant, often acting as technical leaders within their teams. In addition to coding, they mentor other engineers, make architectural decisions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver complex projects. Their expertise is critical in shaping the technical strategy and long-term vision of backend systems.

How does a Staff Backend Software Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams on large-scale projects?

As a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with product managers, frontend engineers, DevOps, and QA teams to define technical requirements and align backend solutions with overall business goals. You’ll often lead technical discussions, provide architectural guidance, and mentor other engineers, ensuring that backend systems integrate smoothly with other components. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, fostering effective teamwork and project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Staff Backend Software Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Staff Backend Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in server-side programming languages (such as Java, Python, or Go), system architecture, and scalable API design, typically with a computer science degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with databases (SQL/NoSQL), cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), CI/CD tools, and often advanced knowledge of containerization or microservices are essential. Strong problem-solving, leadership, and effective communication skills help you drive technical direction and mentor junior engineers. These skills are crucial for building robust backend systems, ensuring team alignment, and delivering reliable, high-performance products.

A successful Staff Backend Software Engineer at Clover drives the development of real-time merchant insights that power everyday decisions for small businesses. In this role, you will lead with technical rigor, support your team's growth, and deliver data-backed products that are as scalable as they are impactful.

The Merchant Insights Engineering team at Clover builds scalable, full-stack applications that deliver data-driven intelligence directly to our merchants-helping them better understand their business operations. This cross-functional team touches everything from data pipelines to web and mobile interfaces, working across Clover's ecosystem of hardware and software to turn raw data into actionable business strategy.

What You'll Do:

  • Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of 6-8 engineers across data, server, web, and Android technologies.
  • Strategy: Set the roadmap and strategy for Clover's merchant-facing insights and analytics platform.
  • Collaboration: Partner with Product, Design, Data Engineering, and Data Science to deliver near real-time insights at scale.
  • Engineering Excellence: Drive excellence through coaching, feedback, process improvement, and system design.
  • Project Execution: Guide end-to-end project execution-ensuring delivery, quality, and cross-team coordination.
  • Operational Ownership: Own incident response and blameless postmortems for the team's products.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience You'll Need to Have:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Software Engineering: 6+ years of professional experience in software engineering.
  • Technical Leadership: 2+ years of experience in a technical leadership role.
  • Java Expertise: 5+ years of hands-on Java development experience.
  • Database Fundamentals: 1+ years of experience with RDBMS (MySQL or similar relational databases) and hands-on experience with SQL and data warehousing.
  • Agile Proficiency: Experienced in the day-to-day practicalities of Software Development Lifecycles, specifically Scrum.

Experience That Would Be Great to Have:

  • API Design: 6+ years of experience with REST API design.
  • Microservices: Proven experience with microservices architecture, preferably using Spring Boot.
  • Data & Analytics: Deep understanding of databases (MySQL and Snowflake preferred) and data warehouse experience.
  • Advanced SQL: Experience writing efficient SQL queries including multi-table joins and experience with JDBC.
  • Cloud & DevOps: Experience with a cloud platform (preferably Google Cloud Platform) alongside Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Scripting & Math: Python scripting experience and a background in data analysis, reporting, or mathematics.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
  • This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.

Benefits at Fiserv:

  • Fuel Your Life program to support your physical, financial, social, and emotional well-being
  • Paid holidays and generous time away policies
  • No-cost mental health support through Employee Assistance Programs
  • Living Proof program to recognize your peers' extra effort with points redeemable for rewards
  • Eight Employee Resource Groups to foster a collaborative culture and expand your network
  • Unparalleled professional growth with training, development, and internal mobility opportunities
