Job description

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Create and implement procedures, standards, and process improvements to enhance quality and timeliness of design work.  Provide recommendations to executive management as needed regarding necessary equipment, personnel needs/changes, and the strategic direction for the department.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the Operational Excellence program.  Assist designers in working with sales, operations, and other design staff as needed to interpret project specifications.
  • Develop project timelines, plan, schedule and assign sprinkler design work. 
  • Oversee the production of detailed design documents from project specifications, architectural drawings, and code requirements using AutoCAD and other software.
  • Provide senior level technical assistance as needed.
  • Review of drawings and stock lists to perform quality and process checks and identify issues that need further discussion or modification.
  • Ensure proper reporting on design project progression.  Facilitate weekly Design Department meetings and provide status updates, issues encountered, manpower, labor consumption, and percent complete vs. schedule.
  • Ensure the department provides timely and accurate entries into operating systems and updates Compass regularly.
  • Perform other duties as required and or assigned by executive management.
  • In addition to building and maintaining a cohesive team atmosphere with design personnel, must maintain positive and cooperative working relationships with project managers, superintendents, fabrication shop management, suppliers, executive staff, and all support functions within S&S/Pye-Barker.
  • Serve as a senior internal and external technical resource for all company offices.

Required Education/Qualification:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Proficient in extensive use of AutoCAD and sprinkler design software, especially HydraCAD.
  • Ability to read and create complex prints and plans.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of NFPA 13 and other relevant NFPA standards
  • Easily able to perform hydraulic calculations, strong math skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with great attention to detail
  • Experience working against deadlines and a good track record of completing projects on time. Strong time management skills with great attention to detail, able to multitask and prioritize workflow.
  • Advanced communication skills that allow effective communication with operations, customers, and management
  • Solid decision making and problem-solving skills.
  • Comfort and proficiency with computer systems, proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Demonstrates strong work ethic and is a self-starter with the ability to use independent judgement.
  • Demonstrates desire for a long-term career and is commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to establish and inspire collective pursuit of a shared vision.

Desired Education/Qualification:  

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related technical field.
  • 10+ years of fire sprinkler system design experience.
  • NICET IV certification in Water Based Systems Layout.
  • Experience designing industrial fire sprinkler systems.
  • Proficient use of AutoCAD to autonomously design sprinkler systems.
  • Proficient use of HydraCAD to design sprinkler systems.
  • Ability to read and understand stock lists and material take-offs.
  • Capable of supporting and mentoring team members on BIM 3D projects.
  • Experience performing job-site field checks/surveys.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Experience with foam and industrial fixed spray & deluge applications is a plus.
  • CFPS certification (Certified Fire Protection Specialist) is a plus.
