Job description

Social Work Intern – Intake, Assessment, and Diversion (Unpaid)


Location: UGM-TC

Academic Program: BSW / MSW Field Placement

Reports To: Licensed Social Worker / Director of Intake, Assessment, and Diversion

Schedule: Monday–Friday, varied hours between 7 AM–7 PM; possible weekends

Duration: Spring & Summer 2026

Compensation: Unpaid internship; academic credit available


About the Role

Join our faith-based, trauma-informed team to support shelter intake and diversion services. Under supervision, you’ll gain hands-on experience in crisis intervention, ethical documentation, and client engagement while applying Trust-Based Relational Intervention® (TBRI®) principles.


Responsibilities

  • Welcome and engage guests with respect and emotional safety
  • Assist with intake interviews, assessments, and diversion planning
  • Maintain accurate documentation and confidentiality within agency database
  • Provide resource information and referrals
  • Participate in weekly supervision and reflective practice


Qualifications

  • Enrolled in BSW or MSW program requiring field placement
  • Commitment to Christ-centered mission and trauma-informed care
  • Strong communication skills and professional boundaries
  • Willingness to learn TBRI® principles (training provided)

Organizational skills are vital for maintaining detailed and confidential records, tracking client progress, and managing multiple responsibilities with professionalism. Proficiency with software and case management systems supports accurate documentation and seamless coordination of care. Furthermore, cultural humility and language proficiency strengthen the intern’s ability to serve diverse populations with sensitivity, ensuring that all clients receive equitable, inclusive, and compassionate support in alignment with trauma-informed and ethical social work practices.
