Job description

Job Summary

The Assistant Sports Director supports the Sports Director in planning, coordinating, and delivering high-quality youth and adult sports programs at the YMCA. This position plays a key role in ensuring safe, engaging, and inclusive experiences that promote sportsmanship, skill development, and the YMCA’s mission of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

Job Responsibilities

Program Operations

  • Assist in the planning, scheduling, and execution of youth and adult sports leagues, clinics, camps, tournaments, and special events.
  • Develop and manage program schedules, rosters, practice plans, league rules, and seasonal timelines.
  • Work independently and manage program set-up, supplies and supervision of leagues
  • Ensure all programs meet YMCA standards for quality, safety, and participant satisfaction.

Staff & Volunteer Leadership

  • Support the recruitment, hiring, training, scheduling, and supervision of part-time staff, including referees, scorekeepers, coaches, and instructors.
  • Provide on-site leadership and guidance during programming hours.
  • Help recruit, train, and communicate with volunteer coaches and team parents.
  • Promote strong customer service expectations and a positive culture among staff.

Member Experience & Communication

  • Serve as a point of contact for participants, parents, coaches, and members, while handling concerns professionally and promptly.
  • Assist with program marketing, registration, and ongoing communication (email, reminders, updates).
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation.

Facility & Equipment Management

  • Assist with facility scheduling and set-up for gyms, fields, and courts.
  • Maintain equipment inventory and replace/purchase equipment when needed.
  • Identify and report facility or safety concerns to appropriate leadership.

Safety, Risk Management & Mission Alignment

  • Enforce safety protocols, conduct equipment inspections, and ensure proper supervision at all times.
  • Respond appropriately to incidents and complete accurate accident/incident reports.
  • Model and promote the YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility in all interactions.

Expectations

  • Dedication to the scope of the role and willing to put in the hours as needed to ensure excellence in the programs. Non-typical work schedule with nights and weekend hours. THIS IS NOT AN 8-5 AND NO WEEKENDS JOB.
  • Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent experience considered.
  • Minimum 1 year of related professional experience
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and scheduling software.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with the ability to supervise staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and customer service skills.
  • Current CPR/AED/First Aid certification (or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire).
  • Passion for working with youth, adults and families and a strong commitment to the YMCA mission.

Pay and benefits of the position:

  • Full time hourly position, $16.83 - $19.23/hour
  • Health insurance – employee only - 75% Y pay, 25% employee pay

  • PTO time – (Paid Time Off) depending upon years of experience

  • YMCA Membership – depending upon family/life situation (family, adult, etc.)

  • Free program fees – depending upon family/life situation

  • 1 paid conference annually (registration fees, travel, food, lodging)
