Job description

Position: Upward League Director

Date: July 2026

Supervisor:  Business Administrator

Supervises:  Upward Assistants, Coaches, Referees, Volunteers

Time Line:  September through March.  Typically Mondays, Tuesdays & Thursdays, 5 pm to 8 pm, and Saturdays, 8:30 am to 6:30 pm.

Pay Range: $21 – 25 per hour dependent on experience and End of Season Bonus - $600 (only if director stays entire season)

Position Type: Non-exempt, temporary position, approximately 20 hours per week from September through March. The work schedule requires flexibility to attend Upward practices and games on evenings and weekends.

Position Overview: The Upward League Director recruits, trains, and supports volunteers who use sports ministry to create ongoing opportunities for children and adults to see, hear, and respond to the gospel. This role serves and supports those carrying out the ministry, acts as its primary point of contact, and communicates with staff, volunteers, and the public as needed.

Coordinates with: Staff, Volunteers, and Parents

Position Requires:

·        A strong personal commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

·        Flexibility and willingness to pivot between a wide range of tasks, including direct ministry, administrative, and support functions.

·        Creative and fun-loving, with the ability to engage children in activities and conversation. Experience working with, or an interest in working with, students in grades K–8.

·        Willingness to work as a team.

·        Strong organizational skills, reliability, and comfort using computers and technology for administrative tasks, including work in MyUpward.org.

·        Must pass criminal background check and reference check.

Responsibilities:

·        Organize and direct a viable Upward Basketball program under the Upward Sports guidelines.

·        Coordinate and facilitate devotionals for games and practices provided by Upward Sports.

·        Manage the Upward program within the budget approved by Session and in coordination with the Business Administrator.

·        Recruit, train, lead and direct a cadre of volunteers in the operation and support of Upward activities. This includes coaches, referees, devotional leaders, etc.

·        Communicate the mission and goals of Upward as a sports ministry, not a sports league.

·        Engage and communicate with parents and respond to their concerns as appropriate.

·        Lead Upward Evaluation process.

·        Conduct Coaches’ Meetings and communicate necessary information to coaches and parents as needed.

·        Coordinate and facilitate gamedays during the season.

·        Plan and facilitate an End of Season Celebration.

·        Organize, promote, set-up and take-down tables, chairs, etc., in support of Upward program.

·        Perform and/or direct Upward Assistants in minor housekeeping/custodial tasks necessary to maintain the FLC (Family Life Center), such as sweeping the gym floor after practices and games.

·        Supervise and maintain public areas during upward practices and games, such as lobby, restrooms and classrooms used as team rooms.

·        Acquire and maintain Upward equipment.  Maintain an appropriate inventory of Upward supplies and materials, re-supply as needed to ensure constant availability.

·        Create promotional materials for Upward that reflect and support its Christian ministry purpose. Obtain supervisor approval before posting or distributing any materials.

·        Perform administrative duties and tasks in support of Upward program with the Upward Assistants.

·        Meet and communicate with supervisor as scheduled.
