What is the average salary of a sport manager?

The average salary of a sport manager can vary widely based on factors such as experience, education, the type of sports organization, and location. In the United States, sport managers typically earn between $40,000 and $100,000 per year, with the median salary around $60,000. Managers working for professional sports teams or large organizations may earn significantly more, while those in smaller or amateur organizations tend to earn less. Benefits and bonuses can also impact total compensation.

What are some common challenges faced by sport managers in balancing team operations and business objectives?

Sport Managers often juggle multiple responsibilities, such as overseeing team logistics, coordinating events, and managing budgets, while also working to enhance the organization's financial and competitive success. To excel as a Sport Manager, you need a solid background in sports administration, business management, and leadership, typically supported by a degree in sports management or a related field. Familiarity with event management software, budgeting tools, and CRM systems is commonly required, and certifications such as Certified Sports Manager (CSM) can be advantageous. Outstanding interpersonal skills, strategic thinking, and the ability to handle high-pressure situations help set top professionals apart. These competencies are essential for effectively organizing sports events, managing teams or facilities, and ensuring operational and financial success in a competitive industry.

If you are based outside the Los Angeles area, we still welcome your application - we value talent from all geographic backgrounds and want to hear from you if you are able to work on-site in LA.
Sport Manager, Rowing- Coastal Beach Sprints
Role Purpose
You will lead the operational planning that delivers Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints at the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Reporting to the Sport Manager, Rowing, you serve as LA28's subject-matter expert for the discipline and the primary liaison with World Rowing. You shape the venues, schedules, equipment, and workforce that bring the discipline to life, coordinating across LA28's functional areas to deliver a world-class competition.
Key Responsibilities
โ€ข Liaise with World Rowing and coordinate with Venues and Infrastructure and Event Management on competition and training venue design.
โ€ข Act as LA28's subject-matter expert for Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints, refining Event Operating Plans and validating equipment requirements with World Rowing.
โ€ข Collaborate with World Rowing on competition and training schedules, and integrate their requirements with Timing, Scoring and Results into systems and infrastructure.
โ€ข Lead the Competition Management workforce for Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints and the Belmont Shore Sport team - strategy, recruitment, onboarding, and daily leadership.
โ€ข Serve as the point of entry and stakeholder manager for World Rowing, managing pre-Games site visits and briefing senior Sport leadership.
โ€ข Manage inputs to the Rowing Sport Delivery Plan and lead the workforce through testing and Games-time delivery.
Required Competencies
โ€ข Minimum 5+ years' experience delivering national- and international-level Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints events in a leadership role.
โ€ข Extensive knowledge of Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints and event operations across multiple levels, with coordination experience with international and US sport governing bodies.
โ€ข Fluent working with Office suite products, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
โ€ข Extremely detail-oriented and highly organized, with strong communication and interpersonal skills to build relationships across the organization and with external stakeholders while balancing assertiveness with diplomacy.
Valued Experience
โ€ข Direct Olympic and Paralympic sport experience at a previous OCOG or multi-sport Games, or delivering international-federation events.
โ€ข A collaborative mindset that prioritizes the team without ego, and the ability to manage change effectively.
โ€ข Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience, preferred.
What We Offer
โ€ข A once-in-a-generation chance to deliver a sport on the world's biggest stage.
โ€ข Real ownership of Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints, from venue design to competition delivery, with cross-functional exposure across LA28.
โ€ข A collaborative Sport team that prioritizes high performance without ego.
What This Role Means for the Games
The plans and workforce you build let athletes compete in Rowing Coastal Beach Sprints at their best before a global audience, making LA28's competition genuinely world-class.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
โ€ข Available to work onsite at our Los Angeles-based office, with international, domestic, and local travel (typically 20% or less of working hours; a valid passport is required) for federation and NGB events and venue site visits, increasing as 2028 approaches.
โ€ข The majority of work will be conducted in an office setting, requiring extended periods of time using computers, phones, and other office equipment.
โ€ข The LA28 office is an open floorplan working environment; employees must be able to work efficiently in an open cubicle environment.
โ€ข Hours of work may vary, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, especially during peak event periods.
โ€ข Perform other duties as required; the role will evolve over time and may include operational responsibilities during the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
