The Role We Want You For

The Accounting Manager is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and oversight of the Project Accounting team. This position is accountable for developing team members, ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of project accounting activities, and maintaining a strong understanding of the systems, processes, and controls that support Project Accounting. 

The Accounting Manager partners closely with Project Accounting, Operations, and Accounting leadership to ensure timely owner billings, effective project financial management, and consistent application of accounting policies and procedures. The successful candidate must be an effective leader and communicator who can manage competing priorities, develop employees, identify and resolve issues, and promote continuous improvement.

The Specifics of the Role

Leadership and Team Management

  • Lead, coach, and develop Project Accounting team members while providing ongoing guidance on accounting responsibilities and day-to-day activities.
  • Foster a collaborative and approachable team environment that encourages communication, accountability, and continuous development.
  • Monitor workloads and project assignments to ensure appropriate staffing, coverage, and allocation of resources.
  • Conduct annual performance reviews and participate in ongoing performance management discussions.
  • Recruit, interview, and hire qualified candidates who demonstrate the skills, experience, work ethic, and collaborative mindset needed to be successful within the team.

Project Accounting

  • Ensure owner billings are prepared by team members accurately, completely, and in accordance with contractual requirements and established deadlines.
  • Review owner billings and provide guidance on complex billing requirements or issues.
  • Monitor owner billing status and work with Project Accountants and Operations to identify and resolve issues that may delay submission.
  • Manage all aspects of Project Accounting for approximately one to two projects to maintain hands-on knowledge of current processes and responsibilities.
  • Oversee Preconstruction billings and review Preconstruction costs monthly for accuracy and appropriate treatment.

Financial Analysis

  • Review monthly Work in Process reports for accuracy and reasonableness.
  • Review significant changes in overbillings, underbillings, and other project activity and provide relevant financial commentary for projects managed by your team.
  • Ensure month-end responsibilities are completed accurately and timely.
  • Oversee monthly intercompany reconciliation and ensure variances are researched and resolved timely.

Systems, Controls, and Process Improvement

  • Maintain a strong working knowledge of systems used by Project Accounting and understand how transactions and data integrate between systems.
  • Ensure compliance with established accounting policies, procedures, system security requirements, and internal controls.
  • Support the implementation, testing, and adoption of new systems, integrations, reports, and process enhancements.
  • Ensure appropriate documentation and supporting records are maintained for accounting transactions.
  • Coordinate contract audits to ensure complete, accurate, and timely responses.
  • Provide supporting documentation and other information required during the annual audit.
  • Assist with sales and use tax audits and other governmental or regulatory audit requests, as applicable.

Other Responsibilities

  • Participate in special projects and department initiatives as assigned.
  • Support department-wide training and process improvement initiatives.
  • Perform other responsibilities as needed to support the Accounting organization.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of accounting experience within the construction industry.
  • Minimum of three years of supervisory or people management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting, including job cost, Work in Process, owner billing, revenue recognition, accounts receivable, accounts payable, and project closeout.
  • Ability to effectively manage and develop employees with varying levels of experience and adapt leadership and coaching styles as appropriate.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, projects, and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively across teams.
