What is a spool?

A Spool job typically refers to the process of managing and coordinating the flow of data or materials in a manufacturing or IT environment. In manufacturing, it often involves preparing and organizing piping or wiring components for assembly. In IT, spooling manages data by temporarily storing it for processing, such as print spooling. The role may include scheduling, tracking, and ensuring efficient workflow. Responsibilities vary based on the industry and specific operational needs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the spool position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spool Operator, you need mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and experience in manufacturing or production environments, often with a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial spool winding machines, basic measurement tools, and following production specifications is essential. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and effective communication skills make someone stand out in this position. These abilities ensure efficient operation, minimize downtime, and maintain high-quality output in high-paced manufacturing settings.

What are some common challenges faced by spool operators, and how can they be overcome?

Spool Operators often face challenges such as maintaining consistent product quality, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and managing tight production schedules. It’s important to understand machinery mechanics and pay close attention to process specifications to identify and resolve issues quickly. Developing strong communication with team members and supervisors can help ensure smooth workflow and minimize errors. With experience, operators become more efficient in problem-solving and recognizing early signs of potential issues, leading to fewer disruptions and greater efficiency on the production floor.

Job description

Mechanical Piping Prefabrication / Spool Modeler

Paulson-Cheek Mechanical, Inc. | Norcross, GA

Position Summary

Paulson-Cheek Mechanical (PCM) is seeking an experienced Mechanical Piping Prefabrication / Spool Modeler to support our mechanical piping prefabrication operations.

This position is responsible for developing precise spool drawings and fabrication documentation for commercial and industrial mechanical piping systems. The role translates coordinated mechanical designs into fabrication-ready spools while ensuring dimensional accuracy, material compliance, constructability, and efficient shop production.

The Spool Modeler will work closely with Engineering, BIM/VDC, fabrication personnel, and field teams to support high-quality prefabrication and reliable field installation.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate has experience working for a large commercial or industrial mechanical contractor and understands the mechanical piping spooling process from start to finish.

We are looking for someone who has been directly involved in the full process—from initial coordination and breaking piping systems into appropriate spool sections through development of complete fabrication-ready spool drawings.

This position requires more than experience limited to dimensioning or annotating drawings. The successful candidate should understand how mechanical piping systems are coordinated, fabricated, assembled, and ultimately installed in the field.

Strong experience with commercial and industrial mechanical piping systems such as chilled water, condenser water, hot water, compressed air, and other hydronic piping systems is particularly important.

Key ResponsibilitiesSpool Production & Technical Detailing
  • Produce accurate mechanical piping spool drawings, including isometrics, weld information, cut lists, bills of material, dimensions, annotations, and other required fabrication details.
  • Break down coordinated piping systems into efficient, constructible, fabrication-ready spool sections.
  • Develop complete prefabrication packages from coordinated piping models and construction documentation.
  • Validate weld sequences, fitting orientation, tolerances, dimensions, connections, and specialty component requirements.
  • Generate detailed material takeoffs for pipe, fittings, valves, supports, and specialty items.
BIM & Modeling
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit and mechanical piping fabrication/spooling software to develop, validate, and maintain piping models and spool drawings.
  • Participate in the spooling process from initial model coordination through final fabrication documentation.
  • Implement model updates resulting from RFIs, design revisions, field changes, and coordination requirements.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation throughout all prefabrication stages.
  • Identify and assist in resolving model coordination and constructability issues before fabrication.
Prefabrication & Fabrication Support
  • Coordinate with welders, fitters, fabrication personnel, Engineering, BIM/VDC, and field teams to resolve fabrication issues or design deviations.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy and spool buildability to minimize shop errors and field rework.
  • Work with fabrication personnel to address issues encountered during welding and fabrication.
  • Support continuous improvement of PCM's mechanical piping prefabrication and spool-production processes.
Quality & Compliance
  • Review spool documentation for dimensional accuracy, material specifications, weld information, and fabrication requirements.
  • Support applicable internal QA/QC requirements and piping standards.
  • Assist in resolving design conflicts, fabrication concerns, and field coordination issues.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Significant experience producing mechanical piping prefabrication and spool packages.
  • Demonstrated experience with the complete piping spooling workflow, including coordination, spool breakout, detailing, and fabrication-ready drawing production.
  • Experience working within a commercial or industrial mechanical contracting environment.
  • Strong hands-on proficiency with Autodesk Revit for mechanical piping modeling and detailing.
  • Experience using Evolve Mechanical, Trimble SysQue, MSuite, or comparable mechanical piping BIM-to-fabrication/spooling software.
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical piping materials, fittings, weld symbols, fabrication processes, installation sequencing, and constructability.
  • Experience with commercial and industrial mechanical piping systems such as chilled water, condenser water, hot water, compressed air, and hydronic systems.
  • Ability to interpret coordinated models, engineered drawings, specifications, and construction documentation.
  • Ability to manage multiple spool packages and priorities concurrently.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to fabrication accuracy and buildability.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced experience with Evolve Mechanical.
  • Experience supporting an in-house mechanical piping fabrication shop.
  • Experience working directly with welders, fitters, and shop personnel to resolve fabrication and constructability issues.
  • Experience with large commercial or industrial HVAC/mechanical construction projects.
  • Familiarity with BIM coordination workflows and shop-production tracking.
  • Knowledge of applicable ASME, ASTM, and mechanical piping fabrication standards.
Additional Requirements
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Ability to work independently through the complete spool-development process.
  • Strong communication and coordination skills across Engineering, BIM/VDC, fabrication, and field operations.
  • Ability to identify potential fabrication or constructability issues before drawings reach shop production.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail in fabrication deliverables.
  • Ability to manage multiple project priorities effectively.
Compensation & Benefits

Paulson-Cheek Mechanical offers a competitive benefits package for eligible employees.

Work Environment

This position is based at Paulson-Cheek Mechanical in Norcross, Georgia and works closely with Engineering, BIM/VDC, and Fabrication operations.

The position requires regular computer-based modeling and detailing work as well as collaboration with fabrication/shop personnel.

Routine travel is not required.

This position offers an experienced mechanical piping professional the opportunity to play an important role in PCM's prefabrication operation while collaborating directly with Engineering, BIM/VDC, fabrication, and field teams.

What Success Looks Like

Success in this role means being able to take a coordinated mechanical piping model and independently move through the complete spooling process—determining practical spool sections, producing accurate fabrication-ready documentation, and working with the fabrication team to resolve issues through production.

The successful candidate will combine strong Revit and spooling-software capability with a practical understanding of how commercial and industrial mechanical pipin
