Industry UsageUsed in creative, tech-driven, experiential, and architectural industriesCommonly used in residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare sectors

The roles overlap in credentials and work environments but differ in scope and focus.

How does a Spatial Experience Designer typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Spatial Experience Designers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, interior designers, engineers, and digital media specialists. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to align on project goals, exchanging feedback on design concepts, and integrating various technical and creative inputs to ensure a cohesive user experience. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as priorities may shift based on client feedback or technical constraints. These collaborations not only enhance the final outcome but also provide valuable opportunities for learning and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Spatial Experience Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Experience Designer, you need a strong background in architecture, interior design, or environmental design, with proficiency in spatial planning and a relevant degree. Familiarity with 3D modeling software (like SketchUp, Rhino, or Revit), Adobe Creative Suite, and sometimes virtual or augmented reality tools is typically required. Exceptional creativity, user-centric thinking, and strong collaboration and communication skills help differentiate top designers. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, functional spaces that meet user needs and project goals.

What are Spatial Experience Designers?

Spatial Experience Designers are professionals who create and optimize physical environments to enhance how people interact with and experience spaces. They combine elements of architecture, interior design, technology, and user experience design to craft environments that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and emotionally engaging. Their work can be found in museums, retail stores, exhibitions, offices, and public spaces. By understanding human behavior and integrating digital or physical elements, they ensure spaces support the desired activities and evoke the intended feelings from users.

Interior Designer I Position

EHDD is seeking thoughtful Interior Designers with exceptional design and communication skills to join our San Francisco office. This is an excellent opportunity to be a part of an award-winning practice that is forward-focused and values the rigorous process of experimentation and implementation. We are equally committed to fostering the professional development of our staff.

Our interior designers play a vital role in shaping experiences from the inside out, bringing material richness, environmental performance, and a human-centered design approach to creating meaningful places where people truly feel they belong. The right candidate will be committed to our mission and core values, bringing compassion and curiosity to their work with a highly collaborative team.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and articulate compelling design concepts through sketches, presentations, and material palettes that communicate a clear design narrative.
  • Develop selection and specification of finishes, furniture, fixtures, and equipment (FF&E), ensuring integration with architectural design and performance goals.
  • Collaborate closely with architects, clients, consultants, and contractors to maintain design intent, quality, and project vision.
  • Mentor and inspire junior interior design staff, fostering creativity, curiosity, and professional growth.
  • Consult with FF&E manufacturers in the research and evaluation of project materials and products.
  • Coordinate consultant drawings (extent of responsibility will vary depending upon the characteristics of the project, its size and complexity, its design objectives and specific experience of the team).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design or Interior Architecture.
  • 4-8 years of relevant professional experience, including interior design on complex projects.
  • Strong conceptual design skills and a refined sense of materiality and spatial experience.
  • Experience with workplace, higher education, cultural, or civic projects preferred.
  • Proficiency in Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and rendering tools (Enscape or similar).
  • NCIDQ certification and/or professional licensure.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Strong 3D visualization skills.
  • Substantial knowledge of building materials, product specification, installation and construction methods as they relate to areas of specialty.
  • General knowledge of product cost, material vs. install, and building codes in reference but not limited to ADA.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify and resolve problems in a timely and positive manner.
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment.
