Spatial Experience Designer information

What is a spatial experience designer?

Spatial Experience Designers are professionals who create and optimize physical environments to enhance how people interact with and experience spaces. They combine elements of architecture, interior design, technology, and user experience design to craft environments that are functional, aesthetically pleasing, and emotionally engaging. Their work can be found in museums, retail stores, exhibitions, offices, and public spaces. By understanding human behavior and integrating digital or physical elements, they ensure spaces support the desired activities and evoke the intended feelings from users.

How does a spatial experience designer typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Spatial Experience Designers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, interior designers, engineers, and digital media specialists. Collaboration often involves regular meetings to align on project goals, exchanging feedback on design concepts, and integrating various technical and creative inputs to ensure a cohesive user experience. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as priorities may shift based on client feedback or technical constraints. These collaborations not only enhance the final outcome but also provide valuable opportunities for learning and professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a spatial experience designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Spatial Experience Designer, you need a strong background in architecture, interior design, or environmental design, with proficiency in spatial planning and a relevant degree. Familiarity with 3D modeling software (like SketchUp, Rhino, or Revit), Adobe Creative Suite, and sometimes virtual or augmented reality tools is typically required. Exceptional creativity, user-centric thinking, and strong collaboration and communication skills help differentiate top designers. These skills ensure the creation of engaging, functional spaces that meet user needs and project goals.

What is the difference between Spatial Experience Designer vs Interior Designer?

AspectSpatial Experience DesignerInterior Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in design, architecture, or related field; certifications varyRequires a degree in interior design or related field; licensure may be required
Work EnvironmentFocuses on immersive, experiential spaces often involving technology and interactive elementsFocuses on aesthetic, functional interior spaces for residential, commercial, or institutional clients
Industry UsageUsed in creative, tech-driven, experiential, and architectural industriesCommonly used in residential, commercial, hospitality, and healthcare sectors

While both roles involve designing physical spaces, a Spatial Experience Designer emphasizes creating immersive, interactive environments often integrating technology, whereas an Interior Designer focuses on aesthetic and functional interior spaces. The roles overlap in credentials and work environments but differ in scope and focus.

What is a spatial experience in design?

A spatial experience in design refers to how people perceive and interact with physical environments, such as interiors, public spaces, or exhibitions. Spatial experience designers focus on creating immersive, functional, and engaging environments using principles of architecture, psychology, and technology, often utilizing tools like 3D modeling and user research. This role aims to enhance user engagement and emotional response within a space.

Job Overview

The AR/VR Interaction Designer will craft intuitive, immersive experiences that help users navigate, learn, and perform tasks in augmented and virtual reality. This role emphasizes interaction design, spatial layout, user workflow logic, and prototyping. The ideal candidate understands how to design for spatial computing, structure 3D environments for clarity and usability, and collaborate with developers and SMEs to bring interactions to life.

This is a great role for someone who thinks like a systems designer + interaction engineer, who can shape how users move, act, and understand complex information in 3D space.

Work Location: Austin, full-time on-site

Key Responsibilities

Spatial UX & Interaction Design

  • Design user interactions, flows, and behaviors for AR/VR applications, focusing on clarity, ergonomics, and realworld usability.

  • Create spatial layouts that organize 3D environments logically and support task completion-without needing to build complex models from scratch.

  • Define interaction patterns (gaze, gesture, controller, handtracking) and specify how users engage with objects, information, and guidance cues.

Prototyping & Experience Architecture

  • Develop low to midfidelity prototypes in Unity/Unreal or XR prototyping tools to validate interactions quickly.

  • Partner with developers to implement interactive behaviors, refine UX patterns, and test feasibility.

  • Iterate rapidly based on feedback from users, SMEs, and engineering partners.

Collaboration with SMEs & Developers

  • Work alongside engineers, instructional designers, and AR/VR developers to translate procedures, workflows, and technical tasks into intuitive immersive experiences.

  • Provide interaction guidelines, annotated mockups, and behavior specifications for developers.

  • Communicate design intent clearly and advocate for usercentric spatial solutions.

Asset Integration & Environment Structuring

  • Import and arrange existing CAD models and 3D assets into functional, navigable AR/VR scenes.

  • Identify asset needs and coordinate with 3D artists when higher-fidelity or optimized models are required-without being responsible for full asset creation.

  • Optimize environment layout (scale, affordances, lighting, navigation flow) for usability and performance.

Documentation & Design Guidelines

  • Create UX specifications, interaction schematics, layout standards, and behavioral logic documentation.

  • Contribute to a cohesive design language for AR/VR experiences that can be reused across training, engineering, and operational use cases.

User Acceptance Testing

  • Determine and apply the most effective user research methodologies to uncover pain points and inform design decisions

  • Conduct usability testing and gather feedback from end-users to ensure designs solve real-world problems effectively.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in AR/VR, interaction design, product design, or spatial UX.

  • Strong understanding of spatial computing principles, ergonomics, and user workflows in 3D environments.

  • Experience with Unity or Unreal for prototyping interactions.

  • Ability to storyboard interactions, communicate system logic, and design clear user pathways.

  • Comfort working with CAD or 3D assets for layout and interaction purposes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing AR/VR training, industrial workflows, or complex procedural experiences in Unity

  • Understanding of realtime performance constraints and AR/VR device capabilities.

  • Background working with instructional designers, technical SMEs, or engineering workflows.

  • Familiarity with UX research in immersive environments.
