What does a sparring partner do?

A typical day for a Sparring Partner involves assisting athletes during training sessions by simulating opponents, participating in drills, and providing real-time feedback to help refine techniques and strategies. The main challenges include maintaining physical readiness, adapting to varying skill levels and training styles, and ensuring personal safety while pushing athletes to improve. Sparring Partners also need to communicate effectively with coaches and athletes to tailor each session to specific training goals. Being attentive and responsive ensures the training is both challenging and constructive, maximizing its value for both you and the athlete.

What is a sparring partner?

A Sparring Partner is someone who provides constructive feedback, challenges ideas, and helps improve decision-making, often in a business, leadership, or sports setting. In a corporate environment, they act as a trusted advisor, encouraging critical thinking and refining strategies. In sports, they help athletes train by simulating real competition scenarios. The role requires strong analytical skills, open communication, and the ability to push others toward growth.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a sparring partner?

To thrive as a Sparring Partner, you need a strong foundation in the relevant sport (such as boxing or martial arts), physical fitness, and excellent technique, often demonstrated through competitive experience or recognized training. Familiarity with standard safety equipment, sparring protocols, and in some cases, certifications from sports governing bodies are important. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help set top sparring partners apart. These skills ensure effective, safe, and productive training sessions that support athletes in reaching peak performance.

How much do sparring partners get paid?

Sparring partners typically earn between $15 and $50 per hour, depending on their experience, the level of training, and the setting, such as gyms, boxing clubs, or professional training camps. Rates can vary based on location and whether the role is paid or voluntary, with some experienced partners earning higher wages for specialized training or professional bouts.

Job description

Your mission

We’re looking for a Head of Engineering to take full ownership of our technology and lead a small, senior engineering team. You set the technical direction, keep the quality bar high, and make sure we keep shipping, as a close sparring partner to our founders and product leadership. You lead the team day to day and still roll up your sleeves when a problem needs your hands on it.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead a small, highly experienced engineering team (5 people): set clear priorities, delegate real ownership, and keep people growing through 1:1s, code-review guidance, and technical sparring.
  • Own engineering quality: reliable standards, architectural reviews, production readiness, and the final gate before release.
  • Act as technical sparring partner for founders, product, and design, and drive delivery end-to-end: from solution design to production, in short cycles, including advancing our SaaS onboarding.
  • Oversee the architecture across distributed systems, APIs, desktop applications, our AWS infrastructure and internal DevOps platform, and a multi-repository codebase with solid infrastructure-as-code, CI/CD, and observability behind it.
  • Own security and compliance in practice: ISO continuity, least-privilege access, secrets management, PKI, and supply-chain security, including recurring audits and technical due diligence.
  • Push our production AI support agent further: more automated ticket resolution, production-grade RAG, tool calling, evaluations, guardrails, and monitoring.

Your profile
  • 10+ years in software engineering, with proven experience leading and developing a small, senior team.
  • You’ve grown up in early-stage startups (seed to Series B) and know that stage, a purely corporate or enterprise background wouldn’t be the right fit here.
  • Deep expertise in TypeScript, Node.js, and React, solid with Python and PostgreSQL, and confident across APIs, distributed systems, production debugging, and multi-repo setups.
  • Advanced AWS knowledge and real ownership of cloud-native production: infrastructure as code, GitOps, CI/CD, observability, plus a practical security mindset and calm judgement during incidents.
  • Production experience with AI agents:RAG, tool calling, workflow automation, evaluations, guardrails, monitoring, approached as software engineering, not model training or ML research.
  • Product-minded and pragmatic: business-focused judgement, no overengineering, and a high shipping cadence. Fluent in English (C1); German is a plus.

Nice to have
  • Desktop applications: Electron, native macOS and Windows apps, gRPC, mTLS, secure storage, code signing, automated updates, and staged rollouts.
  • Direct involvement in ISO certification, recurring audits, and technical due diligence.

Why us?
  • High impact and real ownership from day one: no bureaucracy, no endless approval loops.
  • A small, ambitious team in Berlin and Munich, backed by top European VCs including Atomico and Cherry Ventures.
  • Competitive salary + virtual share package (VSOP).
  • Benefits: public transport ticket or Urban Sports Club/EGYM, Corporate Benefits.
  • Well-equipped offices in Berlin and Munich.

We are looking forward to receiving your application!
Your deeploi Team
