Description
JOB SUMMARY: Gustavus Dining Service is seeking a talented and dependable Baker to join our year-round culinary team. This position plays a key role in preparing a variety of high-quality baked goods for our campus community, including scratch-made breads, pastries, desserts, and specialty items. The Baker also helps mentor student workers and contributes to a collaborative, creative, and fast-paced kitchen environment. If you enjoy early mornings, working with your hands, and bringing joy through food, this is the role for you!
Employment Type: Full-time (1.0 FTE), Non-exempt (Hourly), Benefits-Eligible
Pay Rate: $15.50-16.50 per hour
Typical Schedule: 3:45am - 12:15pm (start/end time open to discussion if flexibility is needed), Sunday through Thursday, with rotating weekends, and as needed for special events (Thanksgiving, Reunion Weekend, Graduation, etc.).
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Prepare a variety of baked goods, including but not limited to: breads, donuts, pizza crusts, cookies, cakes, pies, bars, and seasonal or specialty items.
  • Decorate baked items using a variety of techniques including piping, glazing, icing, and airbrushing.
  • Assist in developing and testing original recipes in collaboration with the Lead Baker and culinary team.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient bakery workspace that meets health and safety standards.
  • Work alongside and mentor college student employees, helping build their skills and confidence in a professional kitchen setting.
  • Assist with inventory management and daily production planning as needed.

Prerequisites
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six months of baking experience in a high-volume dining service, bakery, restaurant, or similar setting.
  • Strong attention to detail, creativity, and a passion for baking.
  • Ability to follow recipes and production timelines while maintaining food safety and quality standards.
  • Willingness to work early mornings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
