What is a solution architect?

A Solution Architect is a professional responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of complex technology solutions to meet specific business needs. They work closely with stakeholders to understand requirements, select appropriate technologies, and create architectural blueprints that guide development teams. Solution Architects ensure that all parts of a project integrate smoothly and align with organizational goals, balancing technical and business considerations. Their role often involves problem-solving, risk management, and providing technical leadership throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solution architect?

To thrive as a Solution Architect, you need a strong background in software engineering, systems design, and business analysis, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in IT architecture. Familiarity with cloud platforms (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), modeling languages (such as UML), and certifications like TOGAF or AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills set outstanding Solution Architects apart. These skills ensure the design of scalable, effective solutions that align with organizational goals and integrate seamlessly across complex technical environments.

How does a solution architect typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

Solution Architects work closely with cross-functional teams such as developers, business analysts, project managers, and stakeholders to ensure that technical solutions align with business goals. They participate in requirement gathering sessions, translate business needs into technical specifications, and guide the development team through architectural best practices. Regular communication and collaboration are essential, as Solution Architects often mediate between technical and non-technical team members to resolve challenges and maintain project momentum. This role frequently involves presenting architectural decisions, soliciting feedback, and ensuring alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

Do solution architects make a lot of money?

Solution architects typically earn high salaries due to their specialized skills in designing complex systems and their experience with cloud platforms, software development, and enterprise architecture. Salaries vary based on industry, location, and experience but generally range from $100,000 to over $150,000 annually. Certifications like AWS or TOGAF can also enhance earning potential.

Is a solution architect a hard job?

A solution architect role is often considered challenging because it requires strong technical knowledge, problem-solving skills, and the ability to design complex systems that meet business needs. The job can involve long hours, high responsibility, and staying current with evolving technologies and industry standards. Success in this role typically depends on experience, certifications, and the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

This opportunity is in the Business Optimization & Transformation Department.

The Business Optimization & Transformation Department's mission is to help Safety National achieve peak performance through innovative business architecture, solution architecture, and process optimization; by removing silos, promoting a collaborative environment, and leveraging industry best practices to translate business challenges into sustainable growth opportunities and drive continuous improvement.

Role Description

As a Solution Architect, you will play a key role in designing scalable, secure, and sustainable technology solutions that enable Safety National's strategic initiatives. Working closely with Product Management, Agile Release Trains (ARTs), product teams, and architecture leaders, you will translate business needs into solution designs that align with enterprise architecture standards while supporting efficient delivery. You'll serve as a trusted technical advisor, helping teams navigate complex integration challenges, modern engineering practices, and architectural decisions that drive long-term business value.
Success in this role requires strong collaboration across business and technology teams, the ability to evaluate solution alternatives, and a passion for building modern enterprise solutions that are secure, reliable, and positioned for future growth.

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field is required. Equivalent professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience documenting end to end initiative solution diagrams using C4 or a similar diagraming standard.
  • 7 or more years of experience in solution architecture, software engineering, systems integration, or a related technical discipline.
  • Experience designing and supporting implementation of complex, multi-system enterprise solutions.
  • Working knowledge of solution architecture concepts including system integration, APIs, application design, and data flows.
  • Familiarity with cloud environments, preferably Microsoft Azure.
  • Understanding non-functional requirements including security, scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Familiarity with enterprise architecture standards, governance, and architectural best practices.
  • Ability to identify and resolve cross-functional integration and interoperability challenges.
  • Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to collaborate across product, business, and technology teams in an Agile environment.
  • Ability to translate business strategies and capabilities into actionable solution architecture guidance and implementation considerations.
  • Ability to quickly learn new technologies, business domains, enterprise platforms, and delivery constraints.
  • Ability to evaluate solution alternatives while considering business, operational, financial, architectural, and risk impacts.
  • Must be presently authorized to work in the U.S. without a requirement for work authorization sponsorship by our company for this position now or in the future.
  • This position allows for a hybrid work schedule which includes a minimum of 3 days per week in our St. Louis Corporate Office, located at 1832 Schuetz Rd., Saint Louis, MO. All employees are required to submit work-from-home requests and follow our Work from Home policy, which will be provided to all candidates selected to interview.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working within Agile or SAFe delivery environments.
  • Familiarity with containerization, CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and modern engineering practices.
  • Experience evaluating vendor platforms and emerging technologies for enterprise adoption.
  • Professional certifications such as SAFe, TOGAF, Microsoft Azure, cloud architecture, or enterprise architecture frameworks.
Protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information and technology assets against unauthorized disclosure, destruction and/or alteration, in accordance with Safety National policies, standards, and procedures.
