Solidworks Application Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SolidWorks application engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solidworks Application Engineer, you need strong proficiency in 3D CAD design, mechanical engineering principles, and typically a degree in engineering or related field. Expertise in using SolidWorks software, familiarity with PLM/PDM systems, and relevant certifications like CSWP or CSWE are highly valued. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and customer service skills help you effectively support clients and collaborate with teams. These skills ensure precise modeling, effective technical support, and successful implementation of design solutions for clients.

How does a SolidWorks application engineer typically collaborate with customers and internal teams?

Solidworks Application Engineers frequently work at the intersection of technical support, customer engagement, and product development. They regularly interact with clients to understand their design challenges, provide technical demonstrations, and offer tailored solutions using Solidworks software. Internally, they collaborate with sales, product management, and engineering teams to relay customer feedback, assist with pre- and post-sales activities, and help improve product features. This role requires strong communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical concepts for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What is the difference between Solidworks Application Engineer vs Mechanical Design Engineer?

AspectSolidworks Application EngineerMechanical Design Engineer
CredentialsProficiency in Solidworks, engineering degree often preferredEngineering degree, CAD skills beneficial
Work EnvironmentCustomer support, technical consulting, software implementationDesign, development, and testing of mechanical components
Industry UsageManufacturing, engineering services, CAD software companiesAutomotive, aerospace, product design

The main difference is that a Solidworks Application Engineer focuses on supporting and implementing Solidworks software solutions for clients, while a Mechanical Design Engineer primarily designs and develops mechanical products. Both roles require CAD skills and engineering knowledge, but their daily tasks and industry focus differ.

What is a SolidWorks application engineer?

A SolidWorks Application Engineer is a technical specialist who supports clients and users of SolidWorks, a popular 3D CAD (computer-aided design) software. Their responsibilities typically include providing technical support, training, and demonstrations, as well as assisting with software implementation and troubleshooting. They work closely with engineering teams to ensure they are using SolidWorks effectively and may also help with product development, customization, and optimization. SolidWorks Application Engineers often act as a bridge between customers and software developers, ensuring user needs are communicated and addressed.

Job description

Job Summary:

We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Field Application Engineer (FAE) to serve as the critical technical liaison between our key customers in the smartphone industry and our back-end manufacturing teams in Asia. The ideal candidate will leverage their knowledge of phone manufacturing processes, to ensure design for manufacturability (DFM), support product development builds, and drive successful mass production. This role requires excellent bilingual communication skills and a willingness to travel.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the primary technical interface for customers, reviewing 2D drawings and 3D CAD models to identify potential manufacturing issues and optimization opportunities.
  • Analyze, prepare, and present comprehensive DFM (Design for Manufacturability) reports to customers, translating their feedback into clear, actionable items for the engineering team and ensuring follow-through.
  • Support product development phases (EVT/DVT/PVT) by traveling to manufacturing sites in Asia or providing remote support for engineering builds, manufacturing processes, and quality control initiatives.
  • Collaborate closely with the business development team to strengthen customer relationships and identify new business opportunities by promoting our technical solutions and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Provide daily technical support and maintain clear, timely communication with customers' engineering and procurement teams.
  • Facilitate smooth information flow and problem resolution between the customer and internal manufacturing, process, and quality engineering teams.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • 1-5 years of experience in SMT (Surface Mount Technology), PCB design engineering, or a closely related role within electronics manufacturing.
  • Specific, technically-oriented experience with phone products is highly preferred.
  • Experience in a customer-facing technical role (e.g., Field Application Engineer, Customer Engineer) or sales engineering is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency with CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks), drafting tools, and CAM software (e.g., CAM350, inCAM) is advantageous.
  • Must be self-motivated, capable of working with minimal supervision, and adept at using sound judgment in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
  • Fluent (oral and written) in both English and Chinese (Mandarin) is required.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to Asia for up to 25% of the time.
