What is the difference between Solar Performance Analyst vs Solar Design Engineer?

AspectSolar Performance AnalystSolar Design Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering, renewable energy, or related field; certifications like NABCEP are commonSimilar credentials; often holds engineering degrees and NABCEP certification
Work EnvironmentAnalyzes system performance data, often in office or remote settingsDesigns solar systems, working in office or on-site for system planning
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by solar companies, consultants, and utilities to optimize performanceUsed by solar installation firms and engineering consultancies for system design

The Solar Performance Analyst focuses on evaluating and optimizing existing solar systems' performance through data analysis, while the Solar Design Engineer is responsible for designing new solar systems. Both roles require similar credentials and often work within the same industry, but their core functions differ in analysis versus design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Performance Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Performance Analyst, you need a solid background in data analysis, solar energy systems, and a relevant degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with solar monitoring platforms, SCADA systems, and data analysis tools like Python, Excel, or PVsyst is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication help distinguish top performers in this role. These competencies are crucial for accurately assessing solar plant performance, identifying issues, and optimizing energy output.

What are some common challenges faced by Solar Performance Analysts when interpreting solar energy data?

Solar Performance Analysts often encounter challenges such as dealing with inconsistent or incomplete data due to sensor malfunctions, weather variability, or communication errors. Accurately distinguishing between system underperformance caused by equipment issues versus external factors like shading or soiling can also be complex. To address these challenges, analysts utilize specialized software, collaborate closely with field technicians, and regularly review maintenance logs to ensure accurate performance assessments and actionable recommendations.

What are Solar Performance Analysts?

Solar Performance Analysts are professionals who monitor, analyze, and optimize the energy production of solar power systems. They use specialized software and data analytics to assess system performance, identify issues, and recommend improvements. Their work ensures that solar installations operate efficiently and deliver maximum energy output. Solar Performance Analysts often collaborate with engineers, maintenance teams, and project managers to maintain high standards of performance and reliability.

Job description

Requisition ID:  95108

NextEra Analytics offers energy consulting services using industry-leading scientific analysis for planning, siting, forecasting and optimizing all forms of energy projects. Our optimization and analytics platforms integrate open-source technologies to leverage massive, diverse sets of utility operating data. This enables rapid development of operational solutions. Applying expertise in advanced mathematics, data and physical sciences, we solve some of the hardest problems facing the energy industry.

Position Specific Description

  • Lead operational assessments for wind, solar, and battery storage assets by leveraging advanced analytics to integrate SCADA, historian, and market data; develop automated data pipelines and visualization dashboards that translate complex datasets into actionable operational insights.
  • Develop and maintain production forecasting models used for financial analysis and budget planning through statistical modeling and scripting in Python, R, and SQL; ensure transparency, reproducibility, and auditability through version-controlled repositories and documented data lineage.
  • Perform asset performance diagnostics using machine learning and time-series analysis techniques; support root cause investigations by mining multi-dimensional operational datasets to identify and resolve chronic underperformance issues.
  • Design and enhance predictive analytics models and algorithmic forecasting tools to identify and mitigate production variances, including implementation of automated bias detection, statistical validation testing, and correction methodologies.
  • Own month-end operational performance reporting by engineering ETL workflows, coordinating cross-functional data inputs, and maintaining data integrity through automated validation scripts and reconciliation processes.
  • Manage end-to-end analytics deliverables supporting operational assessments, budget development, generation and economic entitlement (GenE) analysis, and fleet-level reporting through scalable analytics frameworks and automated workflows.
  • Deliver data-driven insights, risk assessments, and operational recommendations to leadership and risk committees using interactive dashboards, statistical visualizations, and quantitative tradeoff analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Establish and promote best practices for analytics development, data governance, and quality assurance standards; mentor team members in Python, R, SQL, version control, and advanced analytics methodologies while strengthening organizational technical capabilities.
