What is a solar design?

A Solar Design job involves creating plans and layouts for solar energy systems in residential, commercial, or industrial settings. Solar designers assess site conditions, calculate energy needs, and use software to design efficient photovoltaic (PV) systems. They ensure compliance with local regulations, utility requirements, and industry standards. Their work helps optimize energy production while minimizing costs and environmental impact.

What are some common challenges faced by solar design professionals on the job?

Solar Design professionals often encounter the challenge of adapting system designs to complex site conditions, such as shading, roof layouts, or local regulations. Coordinating with multiple project stakeholders—including engineers, installation crews, and permitting authorities—can also require strong organizational and communication skills. Additionally, staying updated on evolving technologies and incentive programs is essential for creating cost-effective and compliant designs. These challenges make the work dynamic and rewarding for those who enjoy problem-solving and continuous learning.

What does a solar design do?

A solar designer creates plans for solar energy systems, including layout, component selection, and system sizing to optimize energy production. They use tools like CAD software and must understand electrical and structural considerations to ensure safety and efficiency.

Is working in solar design a good career path?

Solar design is a growing field that involves creating system layouts for solar energy installations, requiring knowledge of electrical systems and design software. It offers opportunities in renewable energy industries with increasing demand for sustainable solutions and typically requires technical skills and certifications. The career can be stable and rewarding for those interested in environmental impact and engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in solar design, and why are they important?

To excel in Solar Design, you typically need a background in engineering or renewable energy, strong mathematical skills, and experience with photovoltaic (PV) system design. Familiarity with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, PV*SOL, or Helioscope, as well as knowledge of relevant safety codes and certifications like NABCEP, is often required. Strong attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and clear communication help you effectively collaborate with clients, contractors, and team members. These skills and qualities ensure efficient, compliant, and innovative solar energy solutions tailored to client needs and project specifications.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Solar Design Engineer is responsible for the electrical and mechanical design of commercial and utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. This role supports projects from early-stage site evaluation through issued-for-construction (IFC) design, ensuring systems are optimized for performance, constructability, safety, and regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate brings strong technical fundamentals, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across engineering, construction, and project management teams.

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*:

  • Solar System Design & Engineering
  • Develop electrical and mechanical designs for commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems.
  • Produce and review wiring diagrams, one-lines, grounding plans, and electrical schematics.
  • Design mounting layouts and coordinate mechanical integration of racking and structural components.
  • Perform system sizing, energy modeling, and performance analysis.
  • Software & Technical Tools
  • Utilize AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other CAD tools to produce accurate design drawings.
  • Apply MATLAB or similar analytical tools for system modeling and performance evaluation.
  • Use GIS tools for site assessment, layout optimization, and environmental considerations.
  • Cross-Functional Coordination
  • Collaborate with construction, project management, procurement, and permitting teams to ensure constructible designs.
  • Support construction teams with design clarifications and field issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with utilities, AHJs, and third-party engineers as required.

Compliance & Standards

  • Ensure designs comply with applicable electrical codes (NEC), utility requirements, and industry standards.
  • Incorporate best practices related to safety, constructability, and long-term system reliability.
  • Support permitting and interconnection documentation.
  • The Key Job Responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list – additional tasks may be assigned to the team member and the scope of the job may change as necessitated by business demands.
