As of May 29, 2026, the average hourly pay for solar pv design in the United States is $25.62, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $20.67 and $30.05 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar PV Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar PV Designer, you need a solid understanding of electrical engineering principles, solar energy systems, and relevant design standards, typically supported by a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Helioscope, along with knowledge of local electrical codes and potential certifications like NABCEP, is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with project teams and clients. These skills ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant solar system designs that meet project goals and regulatory requirements.

What are the biggest challenges Solar PV Design professionals face when collaborating with installation teams?

Solar PV Design professionals often work closely with installation teams to ensure that system layouts are both technically sound and practically feasible. One common challenge is translating complex engineering plans into actionable steps for on-site teams, especially when unexpected site conditions arise. Effective communication and adaptability are crucial to address issues such as structural limitations or last-minute changes in equipment. Building strong collaborative relationships helps ensure that designs are accurately implemented and project timelines are met.

What is a Solar PV Designer?

A Solar PV Designer is a professional who plans and creates layouts for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, ensuring that solar panels are optimally placed for maximum efficiency and energy generation. Their work involves site assessments, designing electrical schematics, and selecting appropriate components according to building codes and client needs. They use specialized software to create detailed system designs and work closely with engineers, installers, and clients throughout the project. Solar PV Designers play a critical role in the transition to clean energy by making solar installations safe, effective, and reliable.

What is the difference between Solar Pv Design vs Solar PV Installer?

AspectSolar Pv DesignSolar PV Installer
CertificationsDesign certifications, CAD skillsInstallation licenses, safety training
Work EnvironmentOffice, design software, client meetingsOn-site, physical installation work
Job FocusPlanning, system layout, engineeringAssembly, wiring, mounting panels
Industry UsageDesign phase of solar projectsConstruction and installation phase

Solar Pv Design professionals focus on creating detailed system plans and layouts using design software, often working in offices. In contrast, Solar PV Installers execute these plans on-site, handling physical installation and wiring. Both roles are essential in the solar industry, but they differ in skills, environment, and responsibilities.

Job description

About Us
ย
Solar Landscape is the leading commercial rooftop solar developer in the U.S. Only 4% of commercial rooftops host solar today โ€” weโ€™re changing that, fast. Commercial rooftop solar is the fastest, smartest way to build new clean power โ€” delivering megawatts of generation in months, not years, and powering Americaโ€™s energy and future right where itโ€™s needed most. By turning rooftops into local power plants, weโ€™re reshaping how โ€” and how fast โ€” energy gets built in the U.S.

Recognized as the #1 Distributed Generation Developer by New Project Media, the #1 National Commercial Rooftop Solar Developer by Solar Power World, and winner of the U.S. Department of Energyโ€™s Grand Prize for Clean Energy, Solar Landscape is defining the future of energy generation in America.

Headquartered in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Solar Landscape has offices in Chicago, Baltimore, and New York City and operates in over a dozen states nationwide.

We move fast, solve hard problems, and take our work seriously โ€” but never ourselves. We value clear thinking, accountability, and execution. At the same time, weโ€™re collaborative by default, and believe the best work happens when people enjoy working together. Our team is made up of smart, grounded people who show up for each other โ€” whether thatโ€™s troubleshooting a system design or catching up over lunch.

If youโ€™re looking to do meaningful work in a high-performance environment โ€” and be part of the team reshaping how energy gets built in the U.S. โ€” weโ€™d love to meet you.

  • Identify appropriate equipment for use in PV systems and support the engineering team in technical qualification of vendors.
  • Develop necessary customer deliverables such as concept module layouts, single line diagrams, equipment or material specifications, engineering validation, 3-D renderings, and photo simulations.
  • Assist with Request for Proposal (RFPโ€™s) review, technical writing, and response coordination as needed.
  • Work with the broader engineering team and operations to help in the independent engineering management efforts
  • Review drawings and provide responses for client specific needs and if necessary, join meetings to provide technical expertise on the proposed designs
