Description
We are seeking an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to oversee the electrical engineering, permitting, and technical support functions for residential and commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage system (BESS) projects. This position serves as the primary electrical engineering resource for pre-sales, operations, project management, permitting, procurement, utility interconnection, and commercial project development teams.
The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience in solar and energy storage system design, utility interconnection requirements, electrical code compliance, permitting processes, and construction support. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring projects are designed accurately, permitted efficiently, and constructed successfully.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Sales Engineering Support
  • Provide technical guidance on PV and BESS equipment selection and system configuration.
  • Support sales and pre-sales engineering teams with project feasibility assessments.
  • Determine system sizing limitations based on utility requirements, service equipment capacities, site conditions, and applicable regulations.
  • Review project opportunities and identify electrical scope items required for accurate proposal development.
  • Assist with commercial project bidding by reviewing construction documents and identifying electrical design considerations.

Engineering & Design Management
  • Manage the creation and quality control of electrical plan sets for residential and commercial PV and BESS projects.
  • Perform electrical calculations including conductor sizing, overcurrent protection sizing, voltage drop analysis, load calculations, and equipment ratings.
  • Ensure all designs comply with applicable NEC requirements, local codes, utility standards, and AHJ requirements.
  • Coordinate with structural engineering consultants for structural evaluations, engineering letters, and stamped structural plans when required.
  • Review engineering deliverables and maintain design standards across the organization.

Permitting & Regulatory Compliance
  • Prepare and oversee permit application packages and supporting documentation.
  • Serve as the primary engineering contact for building departments and plan reviewers.
  • Resolve plan review comments and permitting deficiencies.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to permit technicians and project managers throughout the permitting process.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving code requirements, utility standards, and permitting regulations.

Operations & Construction Support
  • Provide advanced troubleshooting and technical support to field operations teams and electricians.
  • Resolve electrical design challenges encountered during project construction.
  • Support project managers with engineering-related questions and scope modifications.
  • Review field conditions and recommend compliant design solutions when unforeseen issues arise.

Utility Interconnection & Net Metering
  • Support utility interconnection and net metering teams with technical documentation and engineering requirements.
  • Prepare system sizing letters, energy audit reports, and supporting utility documentation when required.
  • Interpret utility-specific requirements and ensure project compliance throughout the interconnection process.
  • Assist with resolution of utility review comments and technical requests.

Procurement & Material Management
  • Develop and maintain detailed bills of materials for residential and commercial projects.
  • Identify and track engineering-related equipment and construction items not captured during initial project development.
  • Provide equipment specifications and procurement requirements to purchasing and warehouse teams.
  • Support inventory planning through accurate forecasting of engineering-driven material requirements.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of electrical engineering experience in the solar PV industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with residential and commercial solar PV system design.
  • Strong understanding of battery energy storage systems (BESS).
  • Extensive knowledge of the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Experience with utility interconnection and net metering requirements.
  • Experience preparing permit packages and responding to plan review comments.
  • Proficiency with solar design and electrical drafting software.
  • Strong technical writing, communication, and project coordination skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • NABCEP certification.
  • Experience with commercial and industrial solar projects.
  • Experience with utility-scale interconnection processes.
  • Familiarity with structural engineering coordination and construction documentation.
  • Experience supporting procurement, estimating, or project development teams
