As of Aug 24, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar cell in the United States is $78,000.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,000.00 and $99,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a solar cell?

Solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, are devices that convert sunlight directly into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. They are typically made from semiconductor materials like silicon, which absorb photons from sunlight and release electrons, generating an electric current. Solar cells are the building blocks of solar panels, which are widely used for renewable energy generation in homes, businesses, and utility-scale power plants. Their efficiency and affordability have improved significantly over the years, making solar energy an increasingly popular and sustainable power source.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in solar cell research and development?

Professionals in solar cell research and development often face the challenge of balancing efficiency improvements with cost-effectiveness and scalability. Keeping up with rapid technological advancements and integrating new materials or processes can be demanding. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as engineers, material scientists, and manufacturing specialists—is essential to move innovations from the lab to large-scale production. Additionally, navigating strict safety and environmental regulations is a key part of the role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar cell engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Cell Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, physics, electrical engineering, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with photovoltaic simulation software, semiconductor fabrication tools, and industry standards such as IEC or UL certifications is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are vital soft skills for innovating and improving solar cell technology. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing efficient, reliable solar energy solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What is the difference between Solar Cell vs Solar Panel Installer?

AspectSolar CellSolar Panel Installer
Primary RoleIndividual component that converts sunlight into electricityProfessionally installs solar panels and systems
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials; knowledge of solar technologyCertifications like NABCEP, safety training required
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, research labs, or assemblyConstruction sites, rooftops, outdoor locations
Industry UsageComponent within solar energy systemsInstallation and maintenance of solar energy systems

While a solar cell is a fundamental component that converts sunlight into electricity, a solar panel installer is a professional who installs these components into complete solar energy systems. Understanding the difference helps clarify roles in the solar industry, from manufacturing to installation.

Is a solar cell a good career?

A career related to solar cells typically involves roles such as solar photovoltaic technician or engineer, focusing on designing, installing, and maintaining solar energy systems. The industry is growing due to increasing demand for renewable energy, and jobs often require technical skills, certifications, and knowledge of electrical systems. It can offer stable employment opportunities with potential for advancement in the renewable energy sector.

Job description

MANAGER, PRODUCTION - SOLAR CELL FACTORY (STARLINK)

At SpaceX, we are building the next generation of space infrastructure to enable large-scale AI data centers in orbit. These orbital AI platforms require massive amounts of reliable, high-efficiency solar power to support intensive computing workloads in space. To make this possible, we are standing up one of the largest solar cell manufacturing facilities in the world. We are seeking an experienced Production Manager to lead the ramp-up and sustained operation of high-volume solar cell production lines. This high-impact role offers the opportunity to build and shape the production organization from the ground up while directly enabling SpaceX's ambitious vision for AI data centers in space.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead daily operations of high-volume solar cell production lines, driving aggressive ramp-up and sustained output to meet demanding production schedules
  • Own end-to-end performance metrics including yield, throughput, cycle time, and cost-per-watt for space-grade solar cells
  • Build, coach, and develop a high-performing team of production supervisors, specialists, technicians, and associates in a 24/7 environment
  • Implement lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize processes and achieve world-class quality standards
  • Collaborate closely with supporting organizations teams to maximize line uptime and minimize production disruptions
  • Establish and monitor key production KPIs, delivering transparent reporting and data-driven recommendations to senior leadership
  • Champion safety culture, ergonomic practices, and regulatory compliance within all production areas
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and innovation to enable SpaceX's vision for AI data centers in space

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM discipline; OR 5+ years of experience leading manufacturing/operations teams
  • 3+ years of experience working in a manufacturing/operations environment
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership position

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • 8+ years of experience driving yield, throughput, and quality improvements in complex manufacturing/operations environments
  • Proven track record leading cross-functional teams in high-volume, fast-paced manufacturing environments under tight deadlines
  • Hands experience with solar cell production processes, including thin-film deposition and handling of pyrophoric gases and toxic chemicals
  • Experience in related fields such as wafer fabrication, silicon packaging/ingot production, SMT, battery, or chemical manufacturing
  • Strong familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies
  • Deep knowledge of cleanroom protocols, ESD-safe practices, and contamination control in solar or semiconductor fabs
  • Demonstrated ability to make data-driven decisions and drive continuous improvement in a dynamic, high-stakes setting
  • Experience scaling high-volume production operations, ideally in renewable energy, solar, or aerospace manufacturing
  • Ability to lead and execute effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to travel internationally (20%)
  • Ability to stand up to 6 hours, lift up to 25 pounds unassisted, and maneuver around equipment in a factory setting
  • Ability to work in industrial environments with fumes/odors, noise, hazardous chemicals, and confined spaces
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, extended hours and weekends as needed
