How much do solar cell jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for solar cell in the United States is $78,000.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,000.00 and $99,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Solar Cell Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Solar Cell Engineer, you need a strong background in materials science, physics, electrical engineering, and typically a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with photovoltaic simulation software, semiconductor fabrication tools, and industry standards such as IEC or UL certifications is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork are vital soft skills for innovating and improving solar cell technology. These skills and qualities are essential for advancing efficient, reliable solar energy solutions in a rapidly evolving industry.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in solar cell research and development?

Professionals in solar cell research and development often face the challenge of balancing efficiency improvements with cost-effectiveness and scalability. Keeping up with rapid technological advancements and integrating new materials or processes can be demanding. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—such as engineers, material scientists, and manufacturing specialists—is essential to move innovations from the lab to large-scale production. Additionally, navigating strict safety and environmental regulations is a key part of the role.

What are solar cells?

Solar cells, also known as photovoltaic cells, are devices that convert sunlight directly into electricity through the photovoltaic effect. They are typically made from semiconductor materials like silicon, which absorb photons from sunlight and release electrons, generating an electric current. Solar cells are the building blocks of solar panels, which are widely used for renewable energy generation in homes, businesses, and utility-scale power plants. Their efficiency and affordability have improved significantly over the years, making solar energy an increasingly popular and sustainable power source.

What is the difference between Solar Cell vs Solar Panel Installer?

AspectSolar CellSolar Panel Installer
Primary RoleIndividual component that converts sunlight into electricityProfessionally installs solar panels and systems
CredentialsTypically no formal credentials; knowledge of solar technologyCertifications like NABCEP, safety training required
Work EnvironmentManufacturing, research labs, or assemblyConstruction sites, rooftops, outdoor locations
Industry UsageComponent within solar energy systemsInstallation and maintenance of solar energy systems

While a solar cell is a fundamental component that converts sunlight into electricity, a solar panel installer is a professional who installs these components into complete solar energy systems. Understanding the difference helps clarify roles in the solar industry, from manufacturing to installation.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.
MANAGER, MACHINE MAINTENANCE - SOLAR CELL FACTORY (STARLINK)
At SpaceX we are building the next generation of space infrastructure to enable large-scale AI data centers in orbit. These orbital AI platforms require massive amounts of reliable, high-efficiency solar power to support intensive computing workloads in space. To make this possible, we are standing up one of the largest solar cell manufacturing facilities in the world. We are seeking an experienced Machine Maintenance Manager to lead the ramp-up and sustained reliability of advanced production equipment and automation systems. This high-impact role offers the opportunity to build and shape the maintenance organization from the ground up while directly enabling SpaceX's ambitious vision for AI data centers in space.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team of maintenance technicians and engineers responsible for 24/7 reliability of advanced solar cell production equipment
  • Develop and execute comprehensive maintenance strategies, including preventative, predictive, and corrective programs to achieve >95% equipment availability on critical lines
  • Oversee rapid troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and permanent corrective actions for complex systems including vacuum deposition, chemical processing, and automation equipment
  • Partner with Production and Facility Operations teams to integrate maintenance windows with factory schedules while minimizing impact on output targets
  • Manage maintenance budgets, spare parts inventory, and strategic vendor relationships to optimize costs without compromising quality or reliability
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on increasing Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and supporting rapid factory scaling
  • Ensure strict adherence to safety protocols, cleanroom standards, and regulatory requirements during all maintenance activities
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, accountability, and innovation to enable SpaceX's vision for AI data centers in space

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM discipline; OR 5+ years of experience leading industrial maintenance teams
  • 3+ years of experience working in a manufacturing/operations environment
  • 2+ years of experience in a leadership position

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 8+ years of prior experience with semiconductor, solar, advanced automation, or other equipment maintenance and reliability programs
  • Proven track record leading cross-functional teams in high-volume, fast-paced manufacturing environments under tight deadlines
  • Hands-on experience maintaining solar cell production equipment, including thin-film deposition tools (PECVD, sputtering systems, etc.)
  • Strong knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic systems in highly automated production environments
  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and data analytics tools for equipment reliability
  • Strong familiarity with lean manufacturing principles, total productive maintenance, Six Sigma, or similar process improvement methodologies
  • Demonstrated ability to scale maintenance programs in high-growth manufacturing environments, ideally in renewable energy aerospace
  • Deep understanding of cleanroom protocols and safe handling of pyrophoric and toxic gas systems during maintenance
  • Ability to lead and execute effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high standards of quality and safety

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to travel internationally (20%)
  • Ability to stand up to 6 hours, lift up to 25 pounds unassisted, and maneuver around equipment in a factory setting
  • Ability to work in industrial environments with fumes/odors, noise, hazardous chemicals, and confined spaces
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, extended hours, and weekends as needed

ITAR REQUIREMENTS:
  • To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful, permanent resident (aka green card holder), (iii) Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or (iv) Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or be eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.
