What is a solar assistant?

Solar Assistants are entry-level professionals who support solar installation teams by helping with tasks such as transporting materials, preparing job sites, assembling solar panels, and maintaining tools and equipment. They work under the supervision of experienced solar technicians or installers to ensure that solar energy systems are installed safely and efficiently. Solar Assistants may also be involved in basic troubleshooting and cleanup after installation. This role is a great starting point for those interested in a career in the renewable energy industry.

What does a solar assistant do?

As a Solar Assistant, your daily responsibilities often include organizing and preparing materials, assisting with site assessments, and supporting the installation team by handling tools and equipment. You might also help document project progress and coordinate logistics with vendors or clients. This role is highly collaborative, requiring close communication with electricians, project managers, and installers to ensure projects stay on schedule and within safety guidelines. Your work is essential in keeping the workflow smooth and enabling the team to focus on technical tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a solar assistant?

A Solar Assistant typically needs basic electrical knowledge, experience with hand and power tools, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with photovoltaic (PV) systems, safety certifications like OSHA 10, and use of installation software or mobile apps are often required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication enable success on installation sites and when assisting technicians. These skills ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality solar panel installations, supporting the overall success of solar energy projects.

What is the difference between Solar Assistant vs Solar Installer?

AspectSolar AssistantSolar Installer
CertificationsBasic safety and installation training, OSHAAdvanced certifications, NABCEP certification often preferred
Work EnvironmentAssists on-site, supports installation teams, indoor and outdoorLeads installation, works directly on rooftops or ground mounts
Job ResponsibilitiesSupports equipment setup, prep work, and basic tasksPerforms installation, wiring, system setup, and troubleshooting

Solar Assistant roles typically involve supporting installation teams with basic tasks and safety procedures, requiring less certification. Solar Installers perform the actual installation and wiring, often needing advanced certifications. Both roles work in outdoor environments on rooftops or ground mounts, but Solar Installers have more technical responsibilities. The roles are closely related, with Solar Assistants often serving as entry-level positions supporting Solar Installers in the solar industry.

Is it hard to get a job as a solar assistant?

Getting a job as a solar assistant generally requires basic technical knowledge, good communication skills, and sometimes a relevant certification or training. Entry-level positions are often available, and prior experience in construction or customer service can be helpful. The hiring process is typically straightforward for those with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn.

Role Overview

CIG Energy is seeking a Performance Engineer: Solar & BESS to directly support the execution of its multi-gigawatt utility-scale solar and battery energy storage portfolio. This role is a core operational support function for the SVP of Operations, responsible for ensuring that energy models, system designs, EPC assumptions, and financial outputs are technically aligned, bankable, and executable in the field.

This position sits at the intersection of development, EPC execution, and capital markets, and carries real responsibility for protecting project performance, revenue assumptions, and long-term asset value. The Performance Engineer will serve as CIG Energy’s technical authority on energy production, degradation, and system optimization from greenfield development through operations.

· Support decision-making on layouts, equipment selection, and execution tradeoffs

Execution, Design & Optimization

· Support Project Execution teams in the development and coordination of optimized layouts, incorporating constructability, access, topography, interconnection, and construction sequencing constraints.

· Perform layout optimization, shading analysis, energy yield simulations, and detailed loss assessments.

· Conduct site assessments, review topographical and geotechnical data, and analyze meteorological datasets.

· Design and optimize BESS system layouts, including:

· Degradation modeling

· Augmentation strategies

· Long-term capacity and performance planning

· Collaborate closely with EPC partners, project managers, and internal stakeholders to ensure design quality, constructability, and execution alignment.

Financial & Commercial Alignment

· Partner with Capital Markets and Financial Modeling teams to ensure energy model inputs, production profiles, and degradation assumptions are fully aligned with financial models and investment materials.

· Support lender, tax equity, and investor technical diligence by providing clear, defensible performance assumptions and documentation.

· Assist in resolving technical questions related to performance guarantees, availability, and long-term asset value.

Standards, Compliance & Continuous Improvement

· Maintain current knowledge of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, UL, IEEE, IEC, and relevant industry guidance.

· Support performance monitoring, analytics, and reliability tracking across operating assets.

·Identify opportunities to improve modeling accuracy, design standards, and execution outcomes across the platform.

· Perform additional responsibilities as required to support operational execution and business needs.

Minimum Qualifications
