Job Description - Quality Assurance (QA) Manager

Reports To -Director of QA

Location: Remote
Department: Engineering

Position Summary

The QA Manager leads an assigned portion of the QA team within AxisCare's embedded engineering model. QA engineers and analysts sit within engineering teams, and the QA Manager serves as the direct people leader for their assigned group. This role owns the development, health, and day-to-day performance of direct reports while operating within the broader quality standards and strategy established by the Director of QA. The QA Manager is a people leader and quality advocate, focused on team-level execution, individual team member growth, and ensuring quality is consistently built into delivery across their assigned teams.

Key Responsibilities

People

  • Direct manager for an assigned group of QA engineers and analysts embedded across teams
  • Owns hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, and career development for direct reports
  • Holds regular one-on-ones and provides ongoing coaching and feedback
  • Creates clear growth plans and supports development conversations for each direct report
  • Contributes to a team culture grounded in psychological safety, accountability, and continuous learning
  • Actively supports the long-term development of QA Analysts toward QA Engineer roles, leveraging AI-assisted tools and coding skills as those capabilities become a baseline expectation across the team

Quality Standards & Process

  • Applies and reinforces QA standards, testing methodologies, and quality benchmarks established at the Director level across assigned teams
  • Ensures consistency in tooling, test coverage expectations, and best practices within their group
  • Monitors quality metrics and reporting for direct reports, surfacing trends and improvement opportunities to the Director of QA
  • Manages bug tracking and resolution processes within assigned teams
  • Supports the broader adoption of AI-assisted testing tools and automation as a baseline expectation for the team

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Partners with Engineering Managers and Product leaders at the team level on quality strategy, risk, and release readiness
  • Collaborates with engineering leads on test automation strategy, CI/CD integration, and test environment health
  • Communicates quality status, risks, and recommendations clearly to the Director of QA and relevant stakeholders
  • Supports capacity planning within their group and advocates for sustainable workloads
  • Escalates organizational quality risks and systemic issues to the Director of QA

What Success Looks Like

  • Direct reports are growing, engaged, and clear on their career paths
  • Quality standards established by the Director of QA are applied consistently within assigned teams
  • Engineering teams view QA as a collaborative partner, not a gatekeeper
  • The team is proficient in modern QA practices including automation tooling and AI-assisted testing
  • Quality risks are surfaced early and communicated clearly up the chain
  • New team members onboard smoothly and ramp quickly
  • Bug tracking and resolution within assigned teams is timely and well managed
  • QA Analysts within the group are progressing toward QA Engineer capabilities, actively developing AI-assisted testing and coding skills as part of their growth plans

What Were Looking For (Required Qualifications)

    • Experience in software quality assurance with a background in people management or team leadership
    • Mid to senior-level management experience leading QA professionals and managing quality outcomes within a technology organization
    • Proven experience leading and developing QA professionals
    • Strong coaching, feedback, and performance management skills
    • Solid understanding of modern QA practices including automation, CI/CD, and agile development
    • Experience in an embedded QA model or similar distributed team structure
    • Ability to collaborate and align with cross-functional teams at the team and engineering manager level
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate quality data into clear recommendations
    • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
    • Familiarity with AI-assisted testing tools and the ability to champion their adoption
    • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field preferred
    • Equivalent professional experience will be considered in lieu of a degree

What We'd Be Excited to Find (Preferred Qualifications)

    • Prior hands-on QA engineering experience at the analyst or engineer level
    • Experience with tools such as Playwright, TestRail, or similar
    • Familiarity with cloud-based SaaS applications and agile delivery environments
    • Experience in the home care or healthcare technology industry is a plus
    • QA or project management certifications such as ISTQB, CSTE, or PMP are a plus
