What is a software product owner?

A Software Product Owner is a key member of a software development team who is responsible for defining the features and requirements of a product and ensuring that the development team delivers value to customers. They act as the liaison between stakeholders and the development team, prioritizing the product backlog and making decisions about what features should be built next. Product Owners ensure that the development process aligns with business goals and customer needs, often working in Agile frameworks like Scrum. Their role requires strong communication, organization, and decision-making skills.

How does a software product owner typically balance stakeholder expectations with development team capacity?

A Software Product Owner often faces the challenge of aligning diverse stakeholder requests with the practical limits of the development team's capacity. This balancing act involves regular prioritization of the product backlog, transparent communication about what can realistically be delivered in each sprint, and setting clear expectations with stakeholders. Product Owners facilitate refinement sessions to ensure requirements are well-understood and achievable, and they act as a bridge by translating business needs into actionable tasks for developers. Maintaining this balance is critical for delivering value while keeping the team motivated and focused.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software product owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Product Owner, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, requirements gathering, and product lifecycle management, typically supported by a background in computer science or business and relevant experience. Familiarity with Agile frameworks (like Scrum), product management tools (such as Jira or Trello), and certifications like Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) are highly valued. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and prioritization skills help distinguish exceptional Product Owners. These skills are crucial to ensure products align with business goals, development teams stay focused, and customer needs are effectively addressed.

What is the difference between Software Product Owner vs Software Business Analyst?

However, the Product Owner primarily focuses on product vision, backlog management, and delivering value in Agile environments, while the Business Analyst concentrates on analyzing business needs and documenting requirements to support project success.

Are software product owners still in demand?

Software product owners are currently in high demand as organizations seek professionals who can manage product development, prioritize features, and collaborate with cross-functional teams. Strong skills in Agile methodologies, stakeholder communication, and familiarity with tools like Jira or Confluence enhance job prospects in this role.

Is a software product owner a high paying job?

A software product owner typically earns a competitive salary that reflects their experience, skills, and the industry they work in. Salaries for this role often range from mid to high six figures in many regions, especially with certifications like Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and experience managing complex products. Compensation can also include bonuses and stock options depending on the company and location.

What does a software product owner do in software?

A software product owner is responsible for defining the product vision, managing the product backlog, and prioritizing features to ensure the development team delivers value. They act as a bridge between stakeholders and developers, making decisions based on user needs, business goals, and technical feasibility, often using tools like Jira or Trello. Strong communication, domain knowledge, and understanding of Agile methodologies are essential for this role.

Translate the product roadmap into well-defined epics, features, and user stories that support software delivery across Agile teams.

Collaborate with engineering and QA teams to clarify requirements, support solution design, validate implementation, and help ensure high-quality releases.

Participate actively in Agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, backlog refinement, daily stand-ups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.

Support end-to-end product launch activities in collaboration with engineering, support, training, and customer-facing teams.

Optimize user experiences and product performance for Neogen\'s software environments, including solutions that may operate in on-premises, integrated hardware, or performance-sensitive settings.

Monitor product performance, customer feedback, adoption, and usability trends to identify opportunities for enhancement.

Proactively identify process improvements and help drive consistent, effective Agile product ownership practices across teams.

Communicate product priorities, progress, risks, and decisions clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.

Maintain accurate product artifacts, including backlog items, release notes, workflows, requirements documentation, and decision records.

Essential Requirements

Bachelor\'s degree in business, computer science, information systems, engineering, product management, or a related field; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.

3-5 years of experience in software product ownership, product development, business analysis, Agile delivery, or a related software delivery role.

Strong understanding of Agile principles, Scrum practices, backlog management, sprint planning, and iterative software development.

Demonstrated ability to write clear user stories, acceptance criteria, requirements documentation, and product workflows.

Experience using Azure DevOps or a comparable tool to manage backlogs, user stories, work items, sprints, and delivery tracking.

Ability to translate customer, operational, and business needs into actionable technical requirements for engineering teams.

Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex topics to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage competing priorities, timelines, and stakeholder expectations.

Collaborative, team-first approach with the ability to build productive working relationships across product, engineering, QA, support, and business teams.

Analytical problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate options, identify trade-offs, and support decisions with data and stakeholder input.

Proficiency with Microsoft 365 tools, including Teams, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and related collaboration platforms.

Flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment with evolving priorities and business needs.

Ability to work in the United States in accordance with applicable employment requirements.

Desirable Requirements

Experience supporting software products in food safety, animal safety, life sciences, diagnostics, laboratory, manufacturing, supply chain, or other regulated or quality-focused environments.

Experience with software products that integrate with hardware, instruments, on-premises systems, cloud platforms, or enterprise business systems.

Familiarity with UX concepts, usability testing, workflow optimization, or customer journey mapping.

Experience supporting product launches, release readiness, training materials, customer support enablement, or go-to-market activities.

Knowledge of API integrations, data flows, system configuration, or technical architecture concepts.

Experience working with distributed or cross-functional teams across multiple business units or locations.

Product Owner, Scrum, Agile, or related professional certification.

What We Offer

The opportunity to contribute to software products that support Neogen\'s mission and deliver value to customers and teams across the business.

A collaborative environment where product, engineering, customer-facing, and operational teams work together to solve meaningful problems.

Opportunities to strengthen product ownership, Agile delivery, stakeholder management, and software product strategy skills.

A role with visibility across cross-functional teams and the ability to influence product outcomes from discovery through delivery.

A workplace committed to equal employment opportunity, inclusion, and respectful collaboration.
