What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software product owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Product Owner, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, requirements gathering, and product lifecycle management, typically supported by a background in computer science or business and relevant experience. Familiarity with Agile frameworks (like Scrum), product management tools (such as Jira or Trello), and certifications like Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) are highly valued. These skills are crucial to ensure products align with business goals, development teams stay focused, and customer needs are effectively addressed.

What is a software product owner?

A Software Product Owner is a key member of a software development team who is responsible for defining the features and requirements of a product and ensuring that the development team delivers value to customers. They act as the liaison between stakeholders and the development team, prioritizing the product backlog and making decisions about what features should be built next. Product Owners ensure that the development process aligns with business goals and customer needs, often working in Agile frameworks like Scrum. Their role requires strong communication, organization, and decision-making skills.

Product Owners facilitate refinement sessions to ensure requirements are well-understood and achievable, and they act as a bridge by translating business needs into actionable tasks for developers. Maintaining this balance is critical for delivering value while keeping the team motivated and focused.

Orion180 is a company dedicated to delivering exceptional insurance experiences through innovative technology and customer service. They are seeking a Product Owner to manage the requirements lifecycle, collaborate with stakeholders, and ensure high-quality execution of projects.
Responsibilities:
• Engage with business stakeholders to capture detailed requirements. Understand the business context, compliance implications, and user impact of every request.
• Translate business requirements into clear, actionable user stories with specific, testable acceptance criteria. Make sure stories include the "what" and "why" so technical teams can determine the "how."

For new external-facing features, compliance changes, and financial calculations, conduct formal UAT with stakeholders (Level 3).
• For compliance-flagged work, confirm filing dates, effective dates, and regulatory deadlines. Build timelines backward from hard deadlines and track throughout the delivery cycle.
• Provide progress updates, sprint demos, and release communications to business stakeholders. Maintain transparency on delivery status and timeline changes.
• Pursue Product Owner certification if not already held. Attend training to sharpen requirements gathering, story writing, and backlog management skills.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent insurance industry or software product experience.
• Strong ability to dig into business processes, ask the right questions, and produce precise requirements.
• Excellent written documentation skills. Ability to produce clear, detailed user stories and business requirements documents.
• Proven ability to engage stakeholders, clarify priorities, and gain alignment across business and technical teams.
• Hands-on experience with Azure DevOps or similar agile tools for backlog management.

• Serves as the final quality gate for all stories entering sprints (Definition of Ready authority) for Sr Product Owner.
• Mentors and supports Product Owners on story quality, stakeholder engagement, and domain expertise for Sr Product Owner.
• Demonstrated ability to manage cross-Value Stream dependencies, drive release readiness, and support hybrid delivery documentation as needed for Sr Product Owner.

• Strong story writing and backlog management skills for Product Owner.
• Works under the Sr PO's guidance on prioritization and stakeholder management for Product Owner.
