What is a software product owner?

A Software Product Owner is a key member of a software development team who is responsible for defining the features and requirements of a product and ensuring that the development team delivers value to customers. They act as the liaison between stakeholders and the development team, prioritizing the product backlog and making decisions about what features should be built next. Product Owners ensure that the development process aligns with business goals and customer needs, often working in Agile frameworks like Scrum. Their role requires strong communication, organization, and decision-making skills.

How does a software product owner typically balance stakeholder expectations with development team capacity?

A Software Product Owner often faces the challenge of aligning diverse stakeholder requests with the practical limits of the development team's capacity. This balancing act involves regular prioritization of the product backlog, transparent communication about what can realistically be delivered in each sprint, and setting clear expectations with stakeholders. Product Owners facilitate refinement sessions to ensure requirements are well-understood and achievable, and they act as a bridge by translating business needs into actionable tasks for developers. Maintaining this balance is critical for delivering value while keeping the team motivated and focused.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software product owner, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Product Owner, you need a solid understanding of software development processes, requirements gathering, and product lifecycle management, typically supported by a background in computer science or business and relevant experience. Familiarity with Agile frameworks (like Scrum), product management tools (such as Jira or Trello), and certifications like Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) are highly valued. Strong communication, stakeholder management, and prioritization skills help distinguish exceptional Product Owners. These skills are crucial to ensure products align with business goals, development teams stay focused, and customer needs are effectively addressed.

Strong skills in Agile methodologies, stakeholder communication, and familiarity with tools like Jira or Confluence enhance job prospects in this role.

A software product owner typically earns a competitive salary that reflects their experience, skills, and the industry they work in. Salaries for this role often range from mid to high six figures in many regions, especially with certifications like Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO) and experience managing complex products. Duration: 6 months Contract
Overview:
  • We are looking for a Product Owner with strong accounting expertise to support the development of an internal accounting platform. This role requires a unique combination of accounting subject matter expertise and product ownership skills to bridge the gap between business needs and technical implementation.

  • The Product Owner will ensure that the accounting platform is designed and developed in alignment with GAAP accounting practices, workflows, and reporting requirements, while working closely with other product owners, stakeholders, and offshore development teams.

Key Responsibilities:
Accounting & Domain Expertise
  • Partner with existing product owners to make solid decisions regarding LegFi's accounting features and functions.

  • Apply accounting knowledge to guide product design (e.g., income statements, income/expense accounts, debits/credits, reconciliations, vendor credits).

  • Ensure all product features and workflows comply with GAAP accounting standards.

  • Confidently guide developers and product teams on correct accounting logic and workflow design.

  • Validate features and workflows to confirm that accounting outputs (e.g., reports, statements) are accurate and compliant.

Product Ownership
  • Work with internal stakeholders to gather and refine requirements, with a focus on accounting workflows and reporting needs.

  • Translate business and accounting requirements into user stories, acceptance criteria, and workflow designs.

  • Maintain a clear and prioritized product backlog in alignment with business goals.

  • Collaborate closely with offshore development teams to ensure understanding of requirements and accurate solution delivery.

  • Facilitate solution meetings with stakeholders and development teams, serving as the decision-maker on accounting-related product requirements.

  • Define and document acceptance criteria and participate in validation/testing of features.

  • Ensure that features meet stakeholder expectations and deliver business value.

  • Proactively identify gaps or risks in requirements and propose solutions.

  • Act as a liaison between business stakeholders and technical teams, ensuring alignment on product goals and priorities.

Required Skills & Experience:
  • Strong accounting background.

  • Practical knowledge of GAAP accounting standards and how they apply to product workflows.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply accounting principles to software features (e.g., creating accurate income statements from account-level debits and credits).

  • Experience as a Product Owner, Business Analyst, or similar role in agile software development.

  • Strong decision-making ability with the initiative to lead and drive outcomes.

  • Ability to collaborate with multiple product owners and developers in a fast-paced, distributed team environment.

  • Excellent communication skills for stakeholder engagement, requirement gathering, and guiding offshore teams.

Nice to Have:
  • Experience designing or working on accounting/financial platforms.

  • Knowledge of agile frameworks (Scrum, SAFe).

  • Prior experience working with distributed/offshore teams.
