What is remote product management?

Remote product management is the practice of overseeing the development and lifecycle of a product from a location outside a traditional office setting. Remote product managers coordinate with cross-functional teams, set product strategy, gather user feedback, and ensure product goals are met, all while working remotely. They use digital tools to collaborate, communicate, and manage projects efficiently. This role requires strong communication and organization skills, as well as the ability to adapt to virtual work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a remote product manager?

To thrive as a Remote Product Manager, you need a strong foundation in product lifecycle management, market research, and strategic planning, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jira, Trello, product analytics platforms, and proficiency in remote collaboration software such as Slack and Zoom are essential. Exceptional communication, leadership, and self-motivation are critical soft skills for aligning dispersed teams and driving product success from a distance. These skills and qualities are vital for effectively managing product development, fostering collaboration, and delivering results in a remote work environment.

How do remote product managers effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams across different time zones?

Remote product managers often work with team members from engineering, design, marketing, and sales who may be located in various regions. To ensure smooth collaboration, they rely heavily on asynchronous communication tools, regular video meetings, and clear documentation of project goals and updates. Establishing core hours for overlap, using shared project management platforms, and fostering a culture of transparency are essential for keeping everyone aligned and engaged. These strategies help remote product managers overcome the challenges of distance and time zone differences, ensuring that projects stay on track and team members remain connected.

Job description

Are you a product leader who can sit with a client, listen to their needs, see the thing they have not thought to ask for, and deliver solutions built so well they cannot imagine working without it?
At Esquire, we are seeking a Director, Product Management to own prioritization, backlog, and roadmap execution for the products legal teams rely on every day. You will decide what gets built and when, and you will stay with each product through launch and adoption, building the kind of value that compounds for our clients and for Esquire.
Why Choose Esquire?
Esquire is a leader in legal support services, known for innovation, professionalism, and delivering exceptional quality. As part of our team, you will receive competitive benefits and the opportunity to grow within a people-first culture.
We are focused on Getting it Right for our clients, our partners, and our employees. We understand that the client experience begins with us, and we build products that respond to how the legal industry actually works today.
About the Role
As Director, Product Management, you own the product lifecycle from discovery through adoption. You will serve as the primary Product Owner in our Agile practice, translate client needs into requirements engineering can act on, and make the trade-off calls that shape the roadmap.
You will partner with Marketing, Sales, Finance, and Operations on positioning, pricing, and launch, then use analytics and client feedback to judge how the product is performing and what it needs next. This role reports to the Vice President, Product Management.
Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary Product Owner within Agile (Scrum), partnering with Engineering on clear requirements, efficient delivery, and alignment with business needs
  • Translate business needs into product requirements, user stories, and acceptance criteria
  • Engage clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to understand customer workflows, identify unmet needs, and shape product opportunities
  • Communicate product vision, roadmap, priorities, and progress, and keep teams across the company aligned
  • Partner with Marketing, Sales, Finance, and Operations on go-to-market strategy, including positioning, pricing, product launches, and adoption
  • Monitor product performance using analytics and client feedback, and drive ongoing product improvements
  • Manage the product lifecycle and adjust roadmap priorities as business needs and performance data shift
  • Collaborate with IT and Engineering to deliver scalable, integrated solutions across APIs, SaaS, and cloud environments such as AWS and Azure
  • Ensure adherence to governance, data privacy, security, and third-party vendor requirements
  • Contribute to product performance, including revenue growth, cost awareness, and overall product effectiveness

What You'll Need
  • Experience: At least five years in product management or product ownership within software, technology, or a related environment
  • Agile: Experience working with software engineering teams in Scrum or SAFe environments, with a working command of SDLC practices
  • Ownership: Demonstrated ability to own prioritization, manage backlogs, and drive roadmap execution
  • Judgment: Proven ability to solve complex problems, make trade-offs, and work independently
  • Tools: Strong familiarity with product and Agile tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, and Confluence
  • Collaboration: Experience working across Engineering, Sales, Marketing, Service, and Operations, and communicating with both technical and nontechnical stakeholders
  • Commercial: Working knowledge of pricing, market dynamics, and product performance
  • Analysis: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a data-driven approach
  • Organization: Ability to manage multiple priorities, complex initiatives, and deadlines across several workstreams
  • Education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience preferred
  • Preferred: Experience in B2B, legal, fintech, or other workflow-driven environments

What Success Looks Like

  • Timely, reliable delivery aligned to roadmap priorities
  • A high-quality backlog with requirements engineering can build from
