Job description

Here at Scotts Miracle-Gro there is no such thing as a typical day. Our culture is constantly energized by new and exciting growth opportunities and at a rapid pace. Below are details on an open job. If the role interests you and you would like to be considered we encourage you to apply!
The Packaging Engineer will join a dynamic R&D team responsible for the development, testing, qualification and commercialization of packaging systems for the industry leader in consumer lawn and garden products. A specific focus will be on the Controls Portfolio and their supporting products. The Packaging Engineer will be called upon to lead projects that create new business opportunities or improve existing offerings across all business units and retail channels, including the growing eCommerce segments.
The Packaging Engineer will leverage a broad range of packaging materials and manufacturing processes such as: flexible films, blow-molded / thermoform containers, injection molded parts, corrugated shipping containers, and in-store displays to develop packaging solutions that delight our consumers. The development process will include concept creation, prototyping, defining technical performance criteria, establishing test methods, analyzing data, and creating product specifications. Final execution milestones will be BOM creation and store execution.
Key Responsibilities
  • Project Leadership: Lead complex cross-functional teams in the commercialization of new consumer packaged goods. You must be highly accountable, a proactive "doer," and capable of managing shifting project scopes with flexibility.
  • End-to-End Development: Take full ownership of concept design and refinement, timeline development, testing and optimization, data collection, and the creation of robust technical specifications.
  • Innovation & Sustainability: Focus on package development for the consumer Controls space, including products engineered for outdoor display in the elements as well as sustainably designed solutions targeting next-generation consumer pest and weed control applications in the DTC space.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner with packaging suppliers, R&D, Quality, Supply Chain, and Marketing to ensure total business alignment and drive technical excellence through pre-commercial scale-up and launch.
  • Design & Prototyping: Develop advanced conceptual designs and prototypes that enhance the user experience - both internally and leveraging external partners. Identify with the end-user to develop and pitch new product ideas to the business while determining requirements for successful launches.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Utilize Root Cause Analysis (RCA), quality tools, and data-driven decision-making to prevent and resolve complex quality issues, supply chain interruptions, and manufacturing hurdles. Critical Thinking Skills and Technical Curiosity are a must.
  • Testing Standards: Develop and conduct rigorous packaging and product testing standards to improve success rates; maintain a deep understanding of corrugated, rigid, and flexible (film) packaging.
  • Operational Implementation: Manage project resources and budgets from conception to implementation. Work directly with manufacturing partners to troubleshoot and implement equipment that enables new packaging technologies.
Skills & Qualifications
  • Root Cause Analysis (RCA): Required.
  • Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA): Highly preferred.
  • Palletization Software: Proficiency in TOPS or Cape Palletization Software is highly preferred.
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to interpret and review 2D/3D technical drawings required.
  • Software Suites: Proficiency in MS Office and Google Docs Suites required. SAP PLM preferred.
Education and Experience
  • Required Education: B.S. in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering, or a related technical field.
Experience: 3-7 years of progressive experience in packaging development or closely related fields, ideally within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry.
The starting budgeted pay range for this role will generally fall between $77,200.00 - $90,800.00 per year. Scotts will consider various factors in determining the actual pay including your skills, qualifications, experience, and geographical location. For remote roles where the final candidate resides in Alaska, California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, Oregon or Washington, state required pay thresholds will be factored into base salary.
