Both roles require technical knowledge, but their responsibilities and work focus differ significantly.

How does a Software Manager typically balance hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities?

Software Managers often juggle both technical and leadership duties, but the balance can vary depending on the organization and team size. In many cases, Software Managers spend a significant portion of their time on people management tasks such as mentoring team members, conducting code reviews, planning sprints, and facilitating communication between stakeholders. However, they may also remain involved in architectural decisions or critical technical challenges to stay connected with the team's work. Effective Software Managers prioritize delegating coding tasks to their team while focusing on enabling productivity, resolving blockers, and ensuring project alignment with business goals.

  • Ensure high standards for software quality, performance, security, and regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee production support for hosted clients - for example; On call schedules and support, ID3 batch scheduling and processing, and IBM i LPAR utilization and capacity planning.
  • Support adoption of AI/ML-based tools to enhance productivity.

3. People Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, inspire, and develop software developers.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous learning across the offshore teams.
  • Communicate clear career pathways and mentorship for technical leads and emerging leaders.

4. Governance, Quality & Risk Management

  • Uphold development governance frameworks for release management, change control, and code quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with Life insurance regulations and data protection mandates (e.g., privacy, SOC2, and local jurisdictional standards).
  • Monitor and report on engineering KPIs/OKRs - velocity, defect rates, release predictability, and production stability.
  • Lead post-mortems and continuous improvement cycles to strengthen delivery excellence and reduce systemic risks.

5. Communication & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Communicate complex technical strategies and trade-offs effectively to executive leadership, clients, and non-technical audiences.
  • Present program progress, risks, and opportunities with clarity, confidence, and data-driven insight.

  • Proven experience in delivering enterprise-scale software within the Life insurance or broader Insurtech industry.
  • Strong communication, stakeholder management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership presence and ability to drive alignment among cross-functional and executive partners.
