Job description

Dielectric is seeking a motivated Software Support Specialist to assist with the redevelopment of a legacy engineering information system. This temporary, project-based position is ideal for a third- or fourth-year undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Analytics, Information Systems, or a related field who is looking to gain real-world development experience.

The successful candidate will develop a Python-based application to replace a series of complex legacy Excel workbooks that are no longer maintainable. The new system will improve efficiency, accuracy, and long-term usability while supporting engineering calculations and technical data management.

Working alongside experienced Mechanical and Electrical Engineers, the candidate will receive guidance on engineering equations, antenna pattern data, and technical requirements while independently designing, coding, testing, and documenting the new application.

This is an excellent opportunity to build a professional portfolio by developing a production-ready engineering tool that will have a lasting impact on the organization.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and implement a Python-based application to replace a legacy Excel-based engineering system.
  • Analyze existing spreadsheets, formulas, and workflows to understand current functionality.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical and Electrical Engineers to accurately translate engineering equations and technical data into software.
  • Develop a maintainable, well-documented application that supports future enhancements.
  • Test and validate application functionality and data accuracy.
  • Create technical documentation and user instructions for future maintenance.
  • Participate in project meetings to review progress and gather technical requirements.
  • Work independently while providing regular project updates.

Required Qualifications

  • Current junior or senior undergraduate student pursuing a degree in: Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, Data Analytics, or a related technical discipline
  • Proficiency in Python programming.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience working with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with technical teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience developing desktop applications or data processing tools.
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems.
  • Experience working with engineering calculations or scientific data.
  • Exposure to user interface development.
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming principles.
