Software Engineering Mentor information

What is a software engineering mentor?

A Software Engineering Mentor guides and supports aspiring or junior engineers in developing their technical and professional skills. They provide advice on coding best practices, career growth, problem-solving, and industry trends. Mentors may work in companies, bootcamps, or as independent advisors. Their role includes code reviews, mock interviews, and personalized feedback to help mentees succeed in their careers.

What are the typical responsibilities of a software engineering mentor on a day-to-day basis?

As a Software Engineering Mentor, your daily responsibilities often include guiding less-experienced engineers through code reviews, facilitating technical discussions, and providing one-on-one coaching or troubleshooting support. You may also prepare and lead learning sessions, develop technical resources, and help set personal development goals for your mentees. Collaboration is key, as you'll work closely with diverse teams to identify learning opportunities and ensure mentees are progressing within project timelines. This role allows you to directly impact team productivity and help shape the technical skills and careers of aspiring engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineering mentor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Engineering Mentor, you need deep programming expertise, hands-on software development experience, and a proven ability to guide others in best engineering practices. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, agile project management tools, and modern software development frameworks is highly valued, as are certifications in relevant programming languages or agile methodologies. Strong communication, patience, and active listening skills help mentors provide constructive feedback and foster growth in mentees. These qualities are essential for building trust, effectively transferring knowledge, and helping others overcome real-world software engineering challenges.

Job description

Formation Software Engineering Mentor Remote · Contractor

Flexible opportunity to mentor software engineers.

About Formation

We are on a mission to build a more equitable world by helping people from all backgrounds gain the skills they need to land roles they love. We are re‑inventing education by throwing out the one‑size‑fits‑all curriculum and replacing it with AI that is able to pinpoint personal areas of weakness and dynamically schedule mentorship based on each learner’s performance, calendar availability and unique learning goals. Our AI platform powers our flagship Engineering Fellowship, helping engineers from non‑traditional and historically underrepresented backgrounds get hired at the world’s top tech companies. In 2026 so far, we helped our engineers increase their compensation by an average of over $87K. We have over 400 active engineers on the platform and are growing fast.

Description

We are seeking engineering mentors for our exceptional Fellows, and we’d love to hear from you! Formation is an adaptive mentorship Platform to help experienced engineers from all walks of life land super impactful roles and level up their career trajectory.

This is not a full‑time position.

Mentorship is super flexible — you can ramp up or down and conduct sessions on your own schedule — and our mentors are a huge part of our Fellows’ success. The average placed Fellow increased their total compensation by over $100K a year and in 2024 — around 75% have placed at top tier tech companies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are currently looking for a mentors who:

  • Are excited to conduct small group (3–6 person) interactive sessions for System Design, Data Structures & Algorithms, and Technical Behavioral topics.
  • Are a staff+ level engineer and/or have 8+ years of work experience at top tech companies.
  • Regularly conduct technical interviews and comfortable giving actionable feedback to improve performance.
  • Are available about 5 hours a week, though we can work with any availability.

PAYMENT AND LOGISTICS:

  1. If we determine we are a good fit, we will onboard you to our Platform! You’ll input your availability (# of hours a week and time windows), sync your calendar, and be provided with onboarding and shadowing opportunities to get you set up for success.
  2. Mentors get automatically scheduled for sessions every Friday. We provide session templates and all the information you need to help you facilitate each session.
  3. Mentors are paid per completed session, and sessions are generally 1 hour.
  4. Mentors are conducting sessions as independent mentors bound by the terms of service of the Formation Platform and are not employees of Formation.

YOUR IMPACT

We are so proud to say our bar is high and our program works! If you’d like to get a snapshot of our Fellow outcomes in H1 of this year, check out this link!

We also feature several Fellow stories on our website, like Sofie, who went from a video game startup to a senior engineering role at Meta.
