Job description

## Manager, Software EngineeringApplylocations: Bethesda Officetime type: Full timeposted on: Posted 5 Days Agojob requisition id: JR100077It's fun to work in a company where people truly BELIEVE in what they're doing! We're committed to bringing passion and customer focus to the business. LucyRx is hiring an Engineering Manager to own technical quality, execution discipline, and day to day delivery for a growing full stack engineering team. This role is the critical layer between the Senior Director and individual contributors—setting the bar for code quality, consistency, and accountability while ensuring velocity and quality improve together. This is a hands on leadership role. You will write production code, lead meaningful pull request reviews, and pair with engineers on complex problems. At the same time, you will manage people and process: onboarding new engineers, running a tight delivery cadence, providing clear performance feedback, and owning team throughput. We are looking for someone who raises the floor across the entire team—through standards, automation, coaching, and example. Role and ResponsibilitiesSet and Enforce the Technical Bar* Define, document, and enforce coding standards across Spring Boot (Java), React, and React Native, including structure, testing, error handling, observability, and security.* Lead pull‐request reviews with depth and intent. Reviews under your ownership should visibly improve the codebase—not simply approve changes.* Drive consistency across developers so “done” means the same thing regardless of author or location.* Put the automation in place that backs the bar: linting, static analysis, CI quality gates, and test coverage thresholds that prevent regressions from reaching production.Own Team Output and Velocity* Run the day‐to‐day delivery cadence for a team of engineers. Ensure work is well‐scoped, prioritized, and progressing.* Identify variance in velocity and quality across developers and close gaps through pairing, coaching, re‐scoping work, or direct performance conversations.* Own onboarding for new engineers, getting them productive in our Spring Boot, React, React Native stack—and our conventions—within their first 30 days.* Participate actively in hiring. You will inherit the engineers you help select.Hands‐On Engineering Leadership* Spend a meaningful portion of your time (typically 30%+) writing production code, focusing on high‐leverage areas where standardization and quality have outsized impact.* Pair with engineers on architectural decisions and complex modules. Your influence should be visible in the codebase—not just in process and meetings.* Model effective and responsible use of AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude, etc.) in alignment with LucyRx’s enterprise AI usage policies.Cross‐Team Partnership* Partner closely with the data engineering organization on application‐to‐data integration. Review and, when needed, credibly push back on PL/SQL design and query patterns.* Work with product, clinical operations, marketing, and finance stakeholders to translate requirements into clean, maintainable technical solutions.* Proactively surface risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early. We do not want last‐week‐of‐the‐sprint surprises. Qualifications and Education Requirements* Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a closely related field required.* 10+ years of equivalent professional software engineering experience may be considered in lieu of a formal CS degree.* Master’s degree in Computer Science or a related field is a plus and may offset some years of experience.* 8+ years of senior‐level software engineering experience with production systems built on Spring Boot (Java) and React; React Native experience required.* Prior experience leading or managing full‐stack engineering teams, with concrete examples of raising code quality and improving delivery velocity.* Proven player‐coach background: recent hands‐on coding (within the last 6–12 months) and a track record of developing engineers through direct coaching* Deep experience using code reviews as a teaching and quality mechanism—not just a merge gate.* Working knowledge of Oracle PL/SQL, sufficient to read, review, and collaborate effectively with database specialists.* Experience onboarding engineers onto a non‐trivial codebase and accelerating time to productivity.* Comfort operating in regulated environments (HIPAA, SOC 2, or similar).* Active, thoughtful use of AI coding tools, with clear judgment on where they help, where they hurt, and how to govern their use across a team* Cloud and DevOps fluency on Azure (AKS, Azure DevOps, Log Analytics).* Backend: Java 11+, Spring Boot (Data, MVC, Security)* Frontend: React (preferred) or Angular 12+, including state management and responsive design* Database: Advanced PL/SQL (procedures, functions, performance tuning)* Tooling: Git, Maven/Gradle, CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps, Jenkins)Preferences* Experience in healthcare, PBM, payer, financial services, or other highly regulated industries.* Experience integrating new hires during periods of growth or organizational change.* Oracle Certified Professional (PL/SQL)* Azure or AWS Developer Certification* Java SE Programmer CertificationPhysical RequirementsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This is a largely sedentary role; however, some standing, walking, bending, and reaching may be required.
