Job description

Software Engineering Manager
Frontend & Full-Stack Engineering (Hands-On)
Location: Onsite in Tampa, FL, Mesquite, TX, or Seattle, WA
Help Build the Future of Ashley's Digital Experience
Ashley is one of the world's largest furniture manufacturers and retailers, serving millions of customers every year. We're investing heavily in modernizing our digital platform, embracing AI across our business, and building an engineering organization focused on innovation, speed, and technical excellence.
We're looking for a hands-on Software Engineering Manager who enjoys building software as much as building teams.
Initially, you'll spend roughly 60% of your time writing code while leading a team of 5-7 engineers. As the organization grows and additional technical leaders join the team, your focus will naturally evolve toward technical strategy, mentoring, and organizational leadership.
If you're passionate about modern frontend architecture, enjoy solving complex technical problems, and want to help shape the engineering culture of a company investing heavily in digital transformation and AI, we'd love to meet you.
What You'll Be Working On
  • Modernizing Ashley's customer-facing digital platform used by millions of shoppers
  • Building highly performant frontend experiences using modern web technologies
  • Shaping engineering best practices, architecture, and development standards
  • Growing and mentoring a high-performing engineering team
  • Collaborating closely with Product, Design, Data, and AI teams to deliver exceptional customer experiences

What We're Looking For
Strong Frontend Engineering Experience (Most Important)
We're looking for someone who has spent years building modern web applications and still enjoys writing code.
You should have:
  • 8+ years building modern frontend or full-stack applications
  • Expert-level JavaScript and TypeScript
  • Strong experience with React and/or Next.js
  • Experience with modern frontend frameworks (Svelte/SvelteKit experience is a plus, but not required)
  • Deep understanding of frontend architecture, performance optimization, and scalable web applications
  • Experience designing and consuming REST APIs and/or GraphQL
  • Full-stack experience with Node.js or C#

Engineering Leadership
You're an engineering leader who enjoys coaching others while remaining technically involved.
You bring:
  • 3+ years leading software engineering teams
  • Experience managing teams of frontend and full-stack engineers
  • A passion for mentoring, hiring, and developing engineers
  • Strong experience leading code reviews, architecture discussions, and technical decision-making
  • A collaborative leadership style that builds trust and accountability

E-Commerce & Digital Product Experience
Experience building customer-facing digital products is essential.
We're looking for experience with:
  • Retail, e-commerce, or other high-traffic consumer web platforms
  • Modern commerce architectures
  • Progressive Web Apps (PWA)
  • Performance optimization and Core Web Vitals
  • Headless commerce or composable architecture

Experience with Salesforce Commerce Cloud is preferred but not required. Experience with platforms such as Shopify, Adobe Commerce, BigCommerce, or similar modern commerce solutions is equally valuable.
You'll Also Bring
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP
  • CI/CD and modern DevOps practices
  • Docker and Kubernetes
  • Test automation and engineering best practices
  • Agile software development
  • Experience working with distributed engineering teams

Nice to Have
  • Salesforce Commerce Cloud
  • Svelte/SvelteKit
  • AI-assisted software development
  • Micro-frontends
  • Design systems
  • Accessibility (WCAG)
  • Edge computing and CDN technologies
  • Infrastructure as Code
  • Mobile development
  • Open-source contributions

Why This Role?
This is an opportunity to make a significant technical and organizational impact.
You'll help modernize one of the largest retail websites in the industry while influencing the future of Ashley's engineering organization. You'll work alongside talented engineers, help shape technical direction, introduce modern engineering practices, and play a key role in Ashley's journey toward becoming an AI-first company.
If you enjoy solving challenging technical problems, leading exceptional engineers, and still writing meaningful production code, this role offers the opportunity to do all three.
