THE POSITION

The successful candidate will be based in either Calgary or Edmonton and is an integral part of the Keyera Technical Services Group, by supporting existing facilities, integrating with the commercial groups to develop new projects, and being the process lead on projects in the execution phase. The Pipeline Hydraulics Engineer is critical to Keyera as it has a direct impact on the commercial viability, safety, operability, and efficiency of current facilities, and future projects. The individual will be part of a multi-disciplined team and will be responsible for effectively working with a variety of disciplines, as well as external contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work as a Pipeline Hydraulics Engineer to build and maintain all aspects of steady state and transient models for Keyera Pipeline networks
  • Utilize pipeline and facility hydraulic models to perform steady state and transient analysis, and present interpretation of results
  • Prepare process hydraulics reports and supporting calculation packages to document results and recommendations
  • Train team members in the use and best practices of steady state and transient software packages
  • Utilize operational data to forecast risks and assess their impact on pipeline systems
  • Oversee and ensure the effective implementation of surge mitigation strategies and overpressure protection systems based on transient analysis
  • Ensure compliance with company PPMP and quality control procedures
  • Propose and develop additional requirements as appropriate to improve workflow and product accuracy
  • Support new project development as well as supporting MOC's of existing equipment/facilities
  • Identify and recommend improvements to pipeline operating strategies to optimize hydraulic control and capacity
  • Evaluate capacity impacts resulting from integrity evaluations on existing pipeline systems
  • Oversee the design of pressure control and overpressure protection systems on pipeline systems
  • Provide support to day-to-day troubleshooting of operational process issues
  • Participation in HAZOPs, PHAs, design reviews, safety incident investigations.
  • Ability to build key relationships with project stakeholders ie. operations, business development, regulatory, and the project team

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Engineering Degree in Mechanical, Process / Chemical, or sufficient specialization in the relevant area
  • Professional Engineer in good standing with APEGA
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in pipelines/facilities in an operations and/or Engineering role
  • Experience in an Operations-focused role with a midstream or pipeline operating company is a strong asset
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience in developing and running hydraulic transient simulation models
  • Proficiency with industry-standard transient hydraulic modelling tool: DNV's Synergi Pipeline Simulator (SPS)
  • Experience with industry-standard steady state hydraulic modelling tool: Schlumberger Pipesim Steady State Multiphase Flow Simulator
  • Familiarity with the design and operation of pressure control and overpressure protection for pipeline systems
  • Knowledge of industry best practices for operations in Canada and the US
  • Fundamental understanding of pipeline automation and SCADA systems
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Willingness to take accountability for tasks and deliverables and follow them through from start to finish
  • Excellent communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to independently manage multiple and competing priorities
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with internal and external groups, such as 3rd party engineering firms
