What is a software engineer manager?

A Software Engineer Manager is a professional who leads a team of software engineers, overseeing the design, development, and deployment of software projects. They are responsible for managing team performance, setting goals, and ensuring that projects are completed on time and within budget. In addition to technical expertise, they also handle hiring, mentoring, and career development of team members. Software Engineer Managers often collaborate with other departments to align technical solutions with business objectives. Their role combines leadership, project management, and deep technical knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer manager?

To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineer managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

Job description

About NexHealth
Our healthcare system remains frustratingly analog. When you live in a world of one-tap car rides, instant meal delivery, and unlimited streaming, why do you still have to call to schedule a doctor's appointment and fill out a clipboard in the waiting room?
NexHealth's mission is to accelerate innovation in healthcare by connecting patients, providers, and developers. We're building the infrastructure layer for modern healthcare, connecting thousands of fragmented, on-premise, and closed EHR systems into a single, modern platform that powers software, APIs, payments, and patient experiences across the ecosystem.
  • Founded: 2017
  • Headquarters: San Francisco, CA
  • Funding: $177M Series C
  • Employees: 200+
  • Trusted by tens of thousands of providers and hundreds of health-tech developers - forging the infrastructure layer that modern healthcare needs

About the Role
This is a rare chance to get in early on a company redefining what healthcare infrastructure looks like. As a Software Engineer I at NexHealth, you'll work on meaningful, real-world problems from day one - not toy features, not endless ticket queues. You'll write production code that touches the lives of patients and providers across tens of thousands of practices.
We're looking for engineers who are early in their careers but sharp, curious, and ready to grow fast. You'll be embedded in a small, senior team, which means a high learning curve, real ownership, accelerated mentorship and direct exposure to the kind of systems design and architectural thinking that usually takes years to encounter elsewhere.
This role focuses primarily on back-end development, contributing to our core platform - no-permission integrations with the EHRs, high throughput data ingestion pipelines, scaled storage and low latency data serving that connect healthcare's fragmented ecosystem. You don't need to have done this before at scale; you just need the fundamentals, the drive to figure it out and learn from the best.
What You'll Do
  • Build and ship features across NexHealth's core platform, including our healthcare integration API and provider-facing SaaS product, with guidance from senior engineers.
  • Write clean, well-tested, production-ready code - and learn what that actually means in a fast-moving, high-stakes environment.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and architecture conversations - we want your questions and your perspective from the start.
  • Debug and investigate issues in distributed systems, developing the pattern recognition that comes from working on real infrastructure.
  • Contribute to indirect integrations with electronic health record (EHR) systems - one of the most technically complex and impactful parts of what we build.
  • Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineers to scope, plan, and deliver projects end to end.
  • Grow. We invest in our engineers - through mentorship, technical stretch assignments, and the kind of exposure you'd normally have to wait years for.

What You'll Bring
  • A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience that demonstrates strong CS fundamentals.
  • 0-2 years of professional software engineering experience. Internships, co-ops, and meaningful open-source contributions count.
  • Solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, and object-oriented or functional programming concepts.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language; experience with Ruby, Python, Go, or Java is a plus. We primarily use Ruby on Rails.
  • Comfort working with relational databases - you understand what a query is doing and why it might be slow.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and in conversation. You ask good questions and can explain your thinking.
  • Intellectual curiosity and a bias toward figuring things out. Healthcare infrastructure is niche and complex - we'll teach you the domain, but you need to want to learn it.

Bonus Points For
  • Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) or containerization tools like Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Experience with API design, webhooks, or third-party integrations.
  • Any background in healthcare technology, HL7, or FHIR standards - though definitely not required.
  • Prior experience working in a startup or fast-paced product environment.

Compensation
Actual salaries will vary depending on factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just the base salary component of NexHealth's total compensation package for employees. Other benefits may include stock options, an unlimited paid time off policy, and up to 100% coverage on medical, vision and dental insurance.
NexHealth Compensation Range
$120,000-$150,000 USD
Benefits
  • Full Medical, Dental, and Vision (up to 100% covered)
  • 401K and commuter benefits
  • Flexible PTO
  • High-impact work that directly improves the healthcare experience for millions

Our Values
  • Solve the customer's problems, not yoursWhen making decisions, think from the perspective of the customer. It's easy to make decisions that make our lives simpler, but not the customers.
  • Do the things others are not willing to doAs a Nexer, always go after the hardest problems. Pursue things at the highest quality. Move at the fastest pace.
  • Take ownershipAct like a founder. Own your roles, destinies, mistakes, behavior, and our mission. The buck stops with each of us - no blaming or excuses.
  • Say what's on your mind, with positive intentBe direct, proactive, transparent, and frequent in your communication.
  • Default trustAs a Nexer, you do not have to earn trust, trust is given to you by default. If we by default trust each other, our speed of communication, feedback, information sharing, and overall improvements will be a lot faster.
  • Think in first principlesWe first identify the problem and then break it down to its fundamentals before diving into solutions. We constantly ask "why" to validate our assumptions.
