To thrive as a Software Engineer Manager, you need a solid background in software development, team leadership experience, and often a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools (like Jira), version control systems (such as Git), and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure) is typically required, along with relevant certifications. Exceptional communication, problem-solving, and mentoring abilities help you build effective teams and drive project success. These skills ensure you can lead technical initiatives, foster collaboration, and deliver high-quality software solutions in dynamic environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Software Engineer Managers when transitioning from an individual contributor role?

Software Engineer Managers often find the shift from coding-focused work to leadership responsibilities challenging. Instead of primarily writing code, their days are filled with mentoring team members, managing project timelines, and facilitating communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Balancing technical oversight with people management, and learning to delegate effectively, are critical skills to develop. Additionally, they must stay current with technology trends while focusing on team growth and performance.

Job Summary
This position sits at the intersection of SAP expertise and product engineering. As a Senior Software Engineer focused on SAP, you will own the design, development, and long-term roadmap of the connector between the Fastpath Assure platform and SAP. This is a highly visible, technical ownership role where you will drive both the strategic direction of the integration and the hands-on implementation - working closely with product management and engineering leadership to deliver a best-in-class SAP connector.
This position reports directly to the Engineering Manager. While a hybrid work arrangement in our Des Moines office is preferred, remote work from other locations in the U.S. may be considered.
What You'll Do:
โ€ข Own the full lifecycle of the Fastpath Assure-SAP connector, from architecture and design through development, testing, and ongoing maintenance.
โ€ข Drive the technology and implementation roadmap for the SAP connector, partnering with product management and engineering leadership to prioritize and deliver new capabilities.
โ€ข Develop and maintain ABAP programs, function modules, BAPIs, and enhancement frameworks to support data extraction, event handling, and integration with the Fastpath Assure platform.
โ€ข Manage SAP transports across development, QA, and production landscapes, ensuring disciplined change management and adherence to SAP best practices.
โ€ข Apply deep knowledge of the SAP security framework - including TCodes, Authorization Objects, and SAP Fiori app permissions - to build a connector that accurately captures and represents access and risk data.
โ€ข Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define integration requirements, troubleshoot issues across SAP landscapes, and communicate technical decisions clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
โ€ข Leverage AI-driven development tools and coding agents to accelerate delivery and improve engineering productivity.
โ€ข Provide technical mentorship and contribute to a culture of quality, innovation, and continuous improvement.
What You'll Need:
โ€ข Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
โ€ข 5+ years of hands-on SAP development experience, with strong proficiency in ABAP programming including reports, BAPIs, BADIs, user exits, and enhancement spots.
โ€ข Proven experience managing SAP transports and working within structured SAP development, QA, and production landscape environments.
โ€ข Deep understanding of the SAP security framework, including TCodes, Authorization Objects, roles, profiles, and SAP Fiori app access controls.
โ€ข Demonstrated ability to own and drive a technical product or integration from initial design through production delivery with minimal guidance.
โ€ข Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate complex SAP concepts for audiences across engineering, product, and customer teams.
We'd Love to See:
โ€ข Experience with AI-driven development practices, including the use of AI coding agents such as Claude, Codex, or Cursor to accelerate development workflows.
โ€ข Additional development language experience, such as C# .NET or JavaScript, enabling broader contribution across the Fastpath platform stack.
โ€ข Familiarity with SAP GRC (Governance, Risk, and Compliance) concepts, Segregation of Duties (SoD) analysis, or identity and access management solutions.
