What is a software engineer in test?

A Software Engineer In Test (SET) is a professional who specializes in developing and maintaining automated tests and testing frameworks to ensure software quality. Unlike traditional testers, SETs are skilled in programming and work closely with development teams to design testable software, automate repetitive testing tasks, and identify bugs early in the development cycle. Their main goal is to improve the efficiency, effectiveness, and coverage of software testing processes, often contributing to both code quality and faster release cycles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software engineer in test?

To thrive as a Software Engineer in Test, you need a solid background in computer science, strong programming skills (often in Java, Python, or similar languages), and experience with automated testing frameworks. Familiarity with tools such as Selenium, JUnit, TestNG, and CI/CD systems, as well as knowledge of test management platforms, is typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving, and clear communication are critical soft skills that help you design effective test cases and collaborate with development teams. These skills ensure that software products are reliable, scalable, and meet quality standards before release.

What are some common challenges faced by software engineers in test when collaborating with development teams?

Software Engineers In Test (SETs) often face the challenge of ensuring their testing processes keep pace with rapid development cycles. Coordinating closely with developers is essential to identify potential issues early and to align on testing priorities. Communication gaps can sometimes lead to misunderstandings about requirements or missed edge cases, so proactive collaboration is key. Additionally, SETs may need to advocate for sufficient time for thorough test automation, balancing quality with project deadlines.

What is the difference between Software Engineer In Test vs QA Engineer?

  • Design, construct, and maintain automated test reporting infrastructure to provide technical, project, and business visibility into software quality.
  • Contribute to performance and regression test creation, execution, and integration into CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
  • Work as a multi-skilled professional practicing SAFe Agile within SCRUM/Kanban methodology.
  • Take part in continuous improvement through sharing of knowledge and contributing to a shift-left testing mindset within the team.

What We Need

  • 4+ years of total professional experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in software testing and test automation of mobile and/or API-based solutions.
  • 3+ years of experience working on Agile teams.
  • Hands-on experience with Android mobile testing
  • Experience with the Page Object Model (POM) design pattern for test automation frameworks.
  • Experience with version source control systems and Git flow.
  • Experience in designing test plans, defect management, and reporting.
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools (such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude, or similar) to accelerate QA activities, including test case creation, test automation development, execution analysis, and bug reporting.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Experience testing applications on physical Android devices and emulators.
  • Hands-on experience with Android mobile test automation using Appium and Java.
  • Experience with RESTful API testing.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions or similar CI/CD platforms for test integration
  • Familiarity with build environments such as Jenkins or Maven.
  • Experience with Amazon Web Services or Microsoft Azure.
  • Knowledge of Linux, SSH, and shell scripting.
  • Exposure to performance or load testing tools (e.g., JMeter, Gatling, or k6).
  • Certification with TMAP and/or ISTQB.

What You'll Need to Succeed

  • Self-motivation, strong ambition, and interest in directly impacting business results.
  • Resourcefulness, multi-tasking skills, and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Curiosity and a strong passion for data, trend analysis, and storytelling through data.
  • Resiliency and ability to overcome challenges and sound business judgment.
  • Passion for relationship building and building trusted partnerships.
  • Strong attention to detail and a quality-first mindset across the full SDLC.
