How does a Software Development Manager typically balance technical leadership with people management responsibilities?

As a Software Development Manager, you’ll find that balancing hands-on technical leadership with people management is a central part of the role. You’ll spend part of your time guiding architectural decisions and overseeing code quality, while also focusing on coaching, mentoring, and supporting your team’s professional growth. Effective delegation, setting clear priorities, and maintaining open communication with both developers and stakeholders are key to managing these dual responsibilities. Many managers also work closely with product managers, QA, and other departments to ensure alignment across projects.

What Does a Software Development Manager Do?

As a software development manager, your primary responsibilities are to oversee software development teams and to act as a liaison between your teams and senior management. You hire and train new staff, manage and evaluate existing developers, provide guidance on the design and implementation of new software applications, and ensure that projects stay on schedule and within budget. You collaborate with upper-level management and your developers to make sure that new and existing software applications meet business objectives.

What does a Software Development Manager do?

A Software Development Manager oversees teams of software engineers to ensure successful planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate project timelines, allocate resources, and facilitate communication between team members and stakeholders. Additionally, they mentor developers, set technical standards, and help align software initiatives with business objectives. Their role balances technical expertise with leadership and project management responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Software Development Manager, and why are they important?

About Us

Ideal Siding is a fast-growing exterior renovation franchise operating across Canada and the United States. Through our expanding franchise network, we help homeowners access high-quality siding and exterior renovation services while supporting franchisees with systems, marketing, training, vendor relationships, and growth resources.
We are looking for a motivated Business Development Manager to help build and grow partnership programs that create value for our franchisees and support the long-term growth of Ideal Siding. This is a strong opportunity for someone who is mid-career, relationship-driven, organized, coachable, and looking to grow into a broader business development role over time.
About the Role

The Business Development Manager will help identify, develop, and manage partnerships with suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, service providers, software vendors, financing partners, and other industry contacts.
The focus of this role is to create practical, scalable partnership programs for our franchise network. This may include preferred vendor programs, rebate agreements, franchisee discount programs, referral partnerships, training initiatives, sponsorship opportunities, and lead generation partnerships.
This is not a senior executive-level role. We are looking for someone who can take ownership, build strong relationships, follow through, learn quickly, and grow with the company long term.
Key Responsibilities

  • Identify and research potential partners, including suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, service providers, software vendors, and financing partners.
  • Build and maintain relationships with partners that can support franchisee growth.
  • Help develop preferred vendor, rebate, referral, sponsorship, discount, and lead generation programs.
  • Support partner negotiations and program setup with guidance from leadership.
  • Work with franchisees to understand their needs and encourage adoption of partner programs.
  • Track outreach, follow-ups, agreements, and program performance in the CRM.
  • Gather franchisee feedback on vendor quality, pricing, service, and overall program value.
  • Coordinate partner involvement in training, events, and franchise-wide initiatives.
  • Represent Ideal Siding at trade shows, vendor meetings, and industry events when needed.
What Success Looks Like

  • New partner conversations are consistently started and followed up on.
  • Partnership opportunities are clearly tracked and moved forward.
  • Franchisees see practical value from vendor and partner programs.
  • Partner programs help create savings, leads, training, rebates, sponsorships, or operational support.
  • Leadership has clear visibility into outreach, pipeline, program performance, and next steps.
  • The role grows over time as the partnership strategy becomes more mature.
Qualifications & Skills

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in business development, partnerships, account management, B2B sales, vendor relations, or a related role.
  • Strong relationship-building and follow-up skills.
  • Comfortable reaching out to new contacts and starting business conversations.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple conversations at once.
  • Coachable, curious, and open to feedback.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable using CRM tools such as HubSpot, Salesforce, or similar platforms.
  • Able to work independently while staying aligned with leadership.
  • Location: Vancouver, BC preferred. Remote within Canada may be considered, with the ability to travel within Canada and the U.S.
Nice to Have

  • Experience in construction, renovation, franchising, building materials, trades, home services, or supplier/vendor partnerships.
  • Experience using LinkedIn Sales Navigator or other prospecting tools.
  • Experience supporting rebate, referral, sponsorship, vendor, or preferred partner programs.
What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary plus performance-based bonus.
  • Bonus is tied to measurable outcomes such as partner program growth, franchisee adoption, qualified lead opportunities, and revenue or savings created through partner programs.
  • Flexible hybrid remote work environment.
  • Opportunity to work directly with company leadership.
  • Room to grow into a larger business development or partnerships role over time.
  • Exposure to franchising, vendor strategy, supplier relationships, and North American expansion.
  • A practical role where your work can directly support franchisee growth and company revenue.

Flexible work from home options available.
