Software Build Release Engineer information

What are some common challenges software build release engineers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Software Build Release Engineers often juggle multiple projects, each with its own set of dependencies, timelines, and stakeholders. A common challenge is ensuring build consistency and reliability across different environments while meeting tight deadlines. Coordinating with development, QA, and operations teams requires strong communication and organization skills. Automated tooling and clear documentation are essential to efficiently manage and troubleshoot builds, especially when unforeseen integration issues arise.

What does a software build release engineer do?

A Software Build Release Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the processes and tools that build, package, and deploy software applications. They manage version control systems, automate build pipelines, and ensure that new software releases are delivered reliably and efficiently. Their work helps development teams deliver changes quickly while maintaining software quality and stability. They may also troubleshoot build failures, coordinate with developers, and document release processes.

What is the difference between Software Build Release Engineer vs Software Deployment Engineer?

AspectSoftware Build Release EngineerSoftware Deployment Engineer
Primary FocusManaging build processes, version control, and release cyclesImplementing and managing software deployment in production environments
Skills & CertificationsBuild tools, scripting, version control, CI/CD pipelinesDeployment tools, scripting, cloud platforms, automation
Work EnvironmentDevelopment and release teams, CI/CD systemsOperations, DevOps teams, cloud environments
Industry UsageSoftware companies, tech firms, development teamsIT services, cloud providers, software companies

The Software Build Release Engineer primarily manages the build and release process, ensuring software versions are correctly built and released. In contrast, the Software Deployment Engineer focuses on deploying software into production environments, often working closely with operations teams. Both roles require scripting skills and familiarity with automation tools, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a software build release engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Software Build Release Engineer, you need expertise in source code management, build automation, scripting, and strong knowledge of software development processes, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, and experience with CI/CD pipelines and configuration management systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for coordinating with development and operations teams. These skills ensure reliable, efficient software delivery and smooth integration across complex technical environments.

The successful candidate will support software installation, system integration, containerized application deployment, testing, troubleshooting, and software release activities to ensure mission-critical capabilities are successfully delivered to the customer.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure and maintain Windows Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), including domain membership, Group Policy, DNS, and authentication services supporting integrated systems.
  • Deploy, configure, and troubleshoot containerized applications utilizing Red Hat OpenShift within Windows-based enterprise environments.
  • Support software containerization efforts and deployment of applications into OpenShift clusters.
  • Install, configure, and validate software builds, patches, hotfixes, and system updates into the Common Software Baseline.
  • Support software deployment activities at government and contractor facilities, ensuring successful installation and operational readiness.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, execution, and validation of software releases supporting engineering, test, and production environments.
  • Support Government objectives to deliver four planned software releases annually while adapting to emergent operational requirements.
  • Execute software installation verification and perform post-installation functional testing to validate successful deployments.
  • Configure operating systems, application software, Windows services, networking components, and container platforms required for integrated system operation.
  • Troubleshoot software installation issues, Active Directory authentication problems, OpenShift container deployment issues, networking conflicts, and system integration deficiencies.
  • Support software build validation and acceptance testing prior to customer delivery.
  • Execute and document multiple testing disciplines including:
  • Software Build Acceptance Testing, Integration Testing, Regression Testing, Functional Testing, Verification & Validation (V&V), Automation Testing, Cybersecurity Compliance Testing (CCT).
  • Develop, execute, and maintain test procedures, test cases, test plans, and detailed test reports.
  • Capture and document test results, anomalies, defect reports, corrective actions, and integration issues.
  • Support system troubleshooting during laboratory, engineering, customer demonstration, and formal acceptance events.
  • Assist in maintaining software version control and configuration management processes.
  • Coordinate with systems engineering, cybersecurity, quality assurance, DevSecOps, and configuration management personnel to ensure software baselines remain compliant and properly documented.
  • Provide remote and on-site integration and test support at government and contractor facilities as required.
  • Participate in technical interchange meetings, integration reviews, readiness assessments, and customer demonstrations.

  • Experience supporting software deployment and installation in VMware virtual environments.
  • Working knowledge of Windows Server, Windows desktop operating systems, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Experience creating, configuring, and maintaining VMware virtual machines.
  • Experience supporting software integration, system integration, or software deployment efforts.
  • Experience executing structured software testing activities and documenting test results.
