Job Title:

Senior Technical Designer, Socks

About Bombas:

Bombas is a comfort focused premium basics brand with a mission to help those in need. The company launched in 2013, after the founders learned that socks are the #1 most requested clothing item at homeless shelters. From there, they set out to solve that problem, donating a pair of socks for every pair they sell. How do you donate a lot of socks? You sell a lot. And how do you sell a lot? You make the most comfortable socks in the history of feet. Millions of pairs sold and donated later, Bombas has continued to innovate within its mission and product, introducing new socks, as well as underwear and t-shirts, the #2 and #3 most requested clothing items at homeless shelters, all while continuing to make a positive impact on the community where we all work and live.

The word Bombas is derived from the Latin word for bumblebees. Bees work together to make their hive a better place. At Bombas, we're inspired by that. We know it's the collective efforts of our team that keeps the Hive alive and strong - a team that is diverse and inclusive. Different perspectives strengthen our ability to make the most comfortable versions of the products people wear closest to their bodies every day and to serve the communities where we all work and live. We are committed to continuously building a Hive where all are welcomed, seen, and heard regardless of age, color, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, genetics, physical or mental ability, protected veteran status, race, religion and sexual orientation. As a team, we will strive to create room for different experiences and empower all voices.

Based on the specific needs and job requirements, this role will be working out of our Bombas HQ in New York City.
About the Job:

We're looking for a Senior Technical Designer to own the construction and fit, and quality of our sock and hosiery assortment from concept through production. This is a hands-on, detail-obsessed role for someone who loves the engineering side of product - knitting construction, yarn behavior, fit across sizes, and how a great sock actually gets made at scale.

As a senior individual contributor, you'll be the technical authority on sock construction, partnering closely with Design, Product Development, and overseas manufacturing partners to bring products to life that meet our standards for comfort, durability, and fit.

What you'll be responsible for:
  • Own technical specs and construction details for socks and hosiery products, from initial concept through bulk production
  • Build and maintain detailed tech packs, including construction callouts, knit specs, yarn compositions, and grading rules
  • Lead fit sessions, and fit testing across the full-size range, evaluating comfort, compression, and durability
  • Select fit models
  • Maintain the seasonal fit tracker/change log
  • Review and measure proto garments against requested specs, evaluating fit and construction at each stage
  • Communicate spec and fit changes to vendors through Product Development, ensuring factories receive clear, timely instructions
  • Own fit and construction approval in Buy Ready and Quality Reference Sample processes.
  • Manage the wear test process, from planning through evaluating results and translating feedback into spec changes
  • Contribute to the seasonal go-to-market calendar and manage Tech Design deadlines within it
  • Partner with Product Development and Design on the Product Risk Assessment process, identifying fit, construction, and materials risks and proposing solutions
  • Support country of origin (COO) expansion efforts, ensuring product consistency and approvals across factories
  • Partner with suppliers to troubleshoot construction issues, evaluate sample submissions, and drive first-time-right production
  • Travel to factories as needed for development, innovation, and production issue resolution
  • Collaborate closely with Design to translate creative concepts into technically sound, manufacturable products
  • Own grading strategy across sizes to ensure consistent fit and quality at every size point
  • Drive innovation in fit and construction to support category growth, evaluating new yarns, knitting technologies, and construction techniques
  • Evaluate and onboard new tools and processes to support continuous improvement
  • Develop, set up, and maintain technical libraries, construction standards, and fit documentation
  • Identify and resolve quality issues, partnering with Quality and Sourcing teams as needed
  • Mentor junior technical designers and help elevate technical design practices across the team
What we'll love about you:
  • Comfort working directly with overseas factories and mills; experience traveling to or managing relationships with manufacturing partners
  • Sharp eye for fit, quality, and construction detail
  • Strong communication skills and ability to partner cross-functionally with Design, Development, Merchandising, and Sourcing
  • A collaborative, problem-solving mindset and genuine passion for product craft
  • A team player who is willing and happy to help
  • Belief in our mission and an understanding of the importance of giving back
  • Inquisitive, eager to learn, embraces failure, and never gives up
  • Comfortable staying focused while working in any type of environment
What you'll love about us:
  • We are a team of smart, interesting, diverse, funny, and loving people.
  • We offer competitive compensation, employer paid health, medical and dental benefits, 401k with match, paid parental leave, snacks, socks and a fun, relaxed office environment.
  • We take the responsibility to make sure you are excited, happy, and find fulfillment in your work very seriously.
  • We value fun. This is why we host office lunches, offsite team outings and company retreats.
  • We believe in giving back to the community and helping those in need, which is why we volunteer as a team regularly.
  • We believe success comes from the collective effort of all, which is why all full-time employees receive equity in the business.
  • We understand the value of health, relaxation, spending time with friends and family, and traveling the world and offer flexible paid time off for all full-time employees. This includes over 20 paid company holidays, year-round "Flexible Fridays" and unlimited vacation, sick, and wellness days.
  • We understand the importance of communication and offer a monthly phone stipend for all full-time employees.
  • We believe a healthy body equals a healthy mind, so we offer a $100 monthly wellbeing reimbursement to all full-time employees.
What you'll bring:
  • 10+ years of technical design experience, with deep expertise in socks, hosiery, or knit construction
  • Deep technical expertise in sock construction and fit, including sock knitting machine capabilities and limitations
  • Strong knowledge of knitting machinery, yarn types, and construction methods specific to socks/hosiery
  • Experience with digital product creation tools (Apex preferred)
  • Proven experience building tech packs and managing the fit and grading process across a full-size range
  • Proficiency with technical design software (e.g., Illustrator, PLM systems)
