Job description

Company:
Guy Carpenter
Description:
The Smith Group is the market leader in support for the Group Benefits industry. For decades, The Smith Group has maintained a stellar reputation for thought leadership and top-notch service to clients. The group is small (13 people) with a very tight-knit, collaborative environment. The Smith Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Guy Carpenter.
We are seeking a Group Insurance Underwriter, with experience at either a direct Group writer or a Reinsurer. In addition to having regular responsibilities of reinsurance underwriting, we would be looking for this individual to support the broader set of consulting services and market intelligence that Smith Group delivers to clients every day. All members of the Smith Group team are proactive problem-solvers, and we'd expect the same from any new teammate. You should seek opportunities to act independently instead of waiting for someone to tell you what to do. We also highly value strong communication skills since all Smith Group employees frequently interact with our clients directly.
While Portland, Maine is the preferred location, we will consider other office locations for the right candidate. This is a hybrid role that has a requirement of working at least three days a week in a Guy Carpenter office.
We will rely on you to:
  • Assist our partners at MunichRe with reinsurance underwriting support
  • Deliver underwriting support to our clients
  • Add to our bench strength to deliver market intelligence to clients - everything from surveys, webinars, white papers and general research
  • Proactively interact with our clients to support our model of being a first-class service operation

What you need to have:
  • 5+ years of experience in Group Insurance underwriting
  • Sound understanding of reinsurance and its place in Group Insurance
  • Robust knowledge of the Group product suite - Disability, PFML, Life, Supplemental Health (Dental and Vision a bonus)
  • Bachelor's Degree

What makes you stand out?
  • Curiosity - find problems and solve them
  • Versatility - in working for a small company, you need to be ready to do a wide variety of things
  • Avid Learner - a person who is always looking to learn more will have the most success

Why join our team:
  • We help you be your best through professional development opportunities, interesting work and supportive leaders.
  • We foster a vibrant and inclusive culture where you can work with talented colleagues to create new solutions and have impact for colleagues, clients and communities.
  • Our scale enables us to provide a range of career opportunities, as well as benefits and rewards to enhance your well-being.

At Guy Carpenter, a Marsh business, you can be your best. We work on challenges that matter with colleagues who help bring out our best. Our uniquely collaborative environment will empower you to focus on your personal and professional success, learning from top specialists in the (re)insurance industry and leading you towards a rewarding and impactful career.
Guy Carpenter is a business of Marsh (NYSE: MRSH), a global leader in risk, reinsurance and capital, people and investments, and management consulting, advising clients in 130 countries. With annual revenue of over $27 billion and more than 95,000 colleagues, Marsh helps build the confidence to thrive through the power of perspective. For more information about Guy Carpenter, visit guycarp.com, or follow us on LinkedIn and X.
Marsh is committed to embracing a diverse, inclusive and flexible work environment. We aim to attract and retain the best people and embrace diversity of age background, disability, ethnic origin, family duties, gender orientation or expression, marital status, nationality, parental status, personal or social status, political affiliation, race, religion and beliefs, sex/gender, sexual orientation or expression, skin color, veteran status (including protected veterans), or any other characteristic protected by applicable law. If you have a need that requires accommodation, please let us know by contacting reasonableaccommodations@mmc.com.
Marsh is committed to hybrid work, which includes the flexibility of working remotely and the collaboration, connections and professional development benefits of working together in the office. All Marsh colleagues are expected to be in their local office or working onsite with clients at least three days per week. Office-based teams will identify at least one "anchor day" per week on which their full team will be together in person.
